NVIDIA driver update problem

This isn't really directly a Steam problem but I was hoping someone here with a bit more know how than me might be able to help, as I am not finding anything on this specific problem through Google.

The situation is this: I noticed that there was a graphics driver update on GeForce Experience. I have a GeForce GTX 1050. I attempted to update, and everything seemed to go by smoothly. However, after rebooting, I noticed my Windows Aero effects (I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit) were not working. Attempting to run a game through steam also didn't work.

When I look in the Device Manager, the graphics card pops up, but it tells me that there's a problem and therefore the device has been disabled.

I attempted uninstalling everything Nvidia related and reinstalling the latest driver, same thing. I attempted this again but this time not connected to the internet. Same problem still.

I was able to get the card working again, but only by installing vastly outdated drivers through the disc that came with the card in the box. I am now able to play games again, but they are more laggy than usual, possibly because of how old and outdated the driver I have installed is.

Does anyone have a solution to this? Is it perhaps just a bad update? I very much want to get up to date so I can play games properly again, but all attempts to update just result in the same problem, forcing me to use the disc to roll back.

Use clean installation option whenever you download a new graphics driver, and only update when you're having issues and/or you bought a specific game that the drivers are for.

I did attempt the clean installation option, but unfortunately the problem persisted.

you 100% sure you selected the correct OS & bit, graphics card, and what not when updating driver? don't just download a random latest driver. pick from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx


ah, you use geforce experience. I recommend uninstalling that, and downloading manually, and tick don't install geforce experience.

Yes, I am 100% sure that I downloaded the correct driver for my OS, Bit, and Graphics card. I can even point you to the exact update I grabbed if needed.

Yes, I am 100% sure that I downloaded the correct driver for my OS, Bit, and Graphics card. I can even point you to the exact update I grabbed if needed.

edited post. you shouldn't use GFE. it has lots of problems and even slows your system down because shadowplay is always active (unless you use that stuff)... But if that's true, then something else is wrong with your system, do you have latest .net framework and all that stuff, latest windows update, etc? tbh. windows 7 is getting pretty antiquated though... should upgrade to 10.

I do have the latest Windows Update, but I am unsure about .net framework.

I also have recently done a full system virus scan using Avast, and found nothing.

First off, don't bump, edit your last post if you're the last poster.

Secondly, Avast, while up there, doesn't compare much to the giants (Bitdefender at the unrivaled #1 spot, and Kaspersky at #2.).

You can use https://www.nvidia.com/download/find.aspx to search for an earlier driver and see if that works. Maybe one under the current... Again, double check every single dropdown box and make sure it's correct before you install (it defaults to 32 bit).

Apologies, I'm not super familiar with the way things are around the steam forums, it won't happen again.

Edit: I think through memory and a little google I was able to pinpoint the driver I had installed before I attempted to update. It's getting late so I'm not going to attempt installing it now, but sometime soon I plan to do that and see if I have any more luck.

Edit 2: The driver I downloaded last night appears to be working fine, and all my problems appear to be gone.
