Forgive the basic questions; I like to start with the obvious fixes. You'd be surprised how many "broken" PCs weren't plugged in :)

Just a cheap knockoff, no brand
Boot up big picture and activate the controller through the settings.
At the beginning I'd recommend x360ce emulator. It worked with my old "knockoff" controller decently. There's plenty of manuals online how to download and use it.
If that's not working, I'd give a shot to this

though I'm not sure if it'll work, as it might've been designed for DualShock controllers.
The cons of x360ce is that it's not plug-and-play, usually you need to run the program every time you plug in your controller.
The program in the link works like a dream, I had to run it once and now my controller works as plug-and-play.
