How to disable in-game notifications when friend starts a game?

Whenever I am playing a steam game, the lower right corner of my screen becomes continuously polluted with pop-up notifications concerning things I have no interest in knowing. I get notifications about people I have no clue who they are have just done something I could care less about and the damn thing has such tiny fonts that you gotta get an inch from the screen to read it which can never be accomplished anyway since it goes away so fast.

I don't want to know when my friends start up games, it makes me feel like I am spying on them or stalking them. Should I want to play with them I will just send a chat and say something like "Hey, you want to play a game?" It works really really well and it's easier that way.

I looked and looked but can find no option to disable this annoying frickin popup crap. I suggest adding a button in the big empy full screen display with the smallest available font used everwhere possible that comes up when you Shift+Tab which asks "Disable annoying popup notification crap? Yes | No"

Click on Friends & Chat then options (gear). There's a tab for friends, uncheck what you want.
I believe there's no way (yet) to disable group notifications.

there used to be now there isn't anymore. why? because f*ck that's why lol. If I afk for 20 minutes there'll be 5 pop ups on my taskbar

Revert back to the old UI to have that setting toggle again.

In the main steam window (store, library, community and such) In the top left corner click 'steam' -> 'settings'. There go to the 'notifications' tab and de-select 'Show toast' 'When a friend joins a game'

It was moved back to the main settings menu in 2023 with the UI update, long after this thread was last replied to.
