how to get a CD Product Key for electronically purchased games
I just bought a new computer, installed steam, the first game I downloaded from my steam account says I need a product key to proceed. So how do I get this? And steams customer service is the worse I ever seen. You can't reach a live person and it appears you cant email them either

When does the game demand a key? If its for connection to some external server the game will have a " CD KEY" option in your library to display it.

But usually you dont need a CD key to reinstall your old games on a new PC as long as you are logged into the same Steam account as always.

years ago when I purchased a game from a retail store, after you downloaded the disk, you needed the cd product key to proceed. When I started making all my purchases through the steam store, no product key was ever given, you just downloaded the game. So on the new computer it says I need a product key to open the game. Then I can't contact those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from steam to help. Instead they tell you to ask here because they are too careless to help

Because no one can help you without basic information like the name of the game.

ages of empires 3, that's first of several games. If somebody can explain how to email steam, that would possibly help fix this

GFWL game key? Ignore it.
Age of Empires 3 is a GfWL title.
Anyway, has nothing to do with Steam, as Games for Windows LIVE is a Microsoft service. Contact their support if you have an issue with their game.

I called Microsoft and they said since I didn't purchase the game from microsoft, I need to contact the seller. Well the seller is steam. So what now?

Got this from the Running Age of Empires III & Common Gameplay FAQ page on steam

Where is my CD key for Age of Empires III?
Your CD key is visible prior to launching the game on steam, as well as in a popup-overlay when launching the game. You can manually see it by right clicking on the game in your Steam library and selecting “View Game CD Key”.

Did the OP try right-clicking on library game title?

They still do, but only for issues where Support can help. This issue is not one of them, as i already said.
