Why do i keep appearing offline

Even when im online, im shown with the gray box around my profile pic indicating that im offline. Also, when i try to talk with a friend, it wont open the steam chat. i will click "Send Message" over and over again with no luck.

hey, i also same problem with you.... have two days. what every time i change to online, but still keep to offline on my steam chat... after i also have checked my internet have connected ... and have try to login and logout many times too... still keep offline too....
(but i have login my account can see my profile, change setting everythings)
can play and have check on top setting STEAM is it have offline mode, but not enabled offline mode.
this problem is starting to after steam update.
pls help.... who can to fix it?

I am having a similiar issues, my Friends & chat wont login, just keep trying to connect. i have tried clear caches, restarting pc, steam, and routers. I also checked my virus protection programs and steam is cleared to go through. I had the same issues when this new patch was beta, i had to go in and change shortcut to revert back to old chat, but now i cant do that. any other ideas

i have keep try to other way..
After I tried it, I can connected.

My way is to replace go to steam setting change interface language (b4 i'm use chinese interface),
after setting Steam will restart and login account.
So now my steam account interface is using english language, after i change back to chinese language the problem is same connection disabled.

Anyway... this problem i think still have it,even if I changed the language. I am also afraid that I have changed the English interface. This problem will also appear in my English interface.
Timing problem. It can only be used temporarily.

I have try to contact steam customer service, them have respond to me....
new bate this now still no solution yet. :'(
maybe need to wait they.

If have users is experiencing the same problem, please contact Steam Customer Service to let them know the problem. "Not just a few users are experiencing the same problem." They will soon find a way to solve this problem. (Give them pressure XD )

I have same prob. Chat goes offl, and it says i was online like 3 min ago. The forum etc till works.

I guess its due to bad connection.

Did this problem start after the steam UI update?
Anyways, I would recommend you to do this -
add -nochatui -nofriendsui in your Steam properties
It should look like this
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -nochatui -nofriendsui
