running an old unsupported client
Can I just do that?
I run osx 10.6.8 and I want to play some of the old games that I know support this system.
I have the offline backup and I can use it to install the old steam client but I was wondering if this could be a problem, like steam starting believing my account is compromised or something because of the old client.

Anybody is running an old client?

There is, but this is not the question.

Technically you can run an old version of the client. The thing is though that it's going to continuously want to update to the newest version. The old games should run on the newest client...so don't bother. As long as the games you want to install from a backup are from the same account it should just work. Don't bother using an old client. I understand your thoughts of running an old client for other applications is sometimes a good idea due to features wanted that were in an older version but not the newer version and things that worked in an old version don't work the same in newer versions. That's not the case with the Steam Client. If the game is in the steam store it will run on the newest client.

In order to keep the client old, you need to stop it connecting to the internet. Many games will refuse to run (at some point) if the client has't called home for a while. Theoretically, you could restore a fresh back up each time that happens, and/or maybe mess with the clock on the PC to keep it fooled. It'd be stupid though, there are easier ways. Like keeping the client (and your OS) updated.

well the problem is that steam is not supporting that old OSX version since 2015 or somewhere around that time so I can't use a newer client. I have a safe blocked version that I can use that will not update. I was told that I can use the games that still support the os

The old OSX version the game was designed for?
I'm not an expert with Mac's. Isn't there a compatability mode in OSX like there is in windows where you can tell it to "Run as *this* version" of the operating system that corrects those kinds of things?

I'd rather see you use the newest client just to prevent issues but if there's no way around it for the older games you want to play it's something you can try but it's not going to work for very long. As Washell said there is a time limit for running games in offline mode which is 2 weeks (I've learned the hard way). You have to log in online and launch the game you're playing at least once every 2 weeks or the game will not launch anymore after those 2 weeks of playing it in offline mode expires.

I'll look through my support tickets to share what support told me about it.
I was playing a game in offline mode because I didn't have internet and all of a sudden one day the client wouldn't go in to offline mode...because of this 2 weeks thing.
So you'll have to get the games running on the current version somehow. Maybe using an OS emulator to run the same older version of OSX will do it?
Like in windows you can run the older software in newer OS version but not visa versa.

The client is not working below OSX 10.8 but I have returned in 10.6 for reasons related to how crap OSX have became.

The games that I can play on this little machine should work.
I guess I will give it a shot, what could go wrong anyway.
Well it worked... I will try to download a game from the library tonight.

It's not going to destroy your computer. The most that will happen is that it will want to update to the newest version when you go online with it (should be able to decline the update), if you play in offline mode it's going to require you to login and launch the game at least once every 2 weeks or it won't launch offline mode, and it could eventually just stop working.
I get a messege about unsupported os but that's all, there is a file with a changed line in the package that prevent auto update of the client so it works, I was able to check my library, profile, activity and the store like no problem.

I will try a game tonight and report back in case anyone find this thread with google search and want answers on the matter.

There isn't....and using cracked, or unsupported clients gets you more trouble than you want. Unless you want to lose every Steam account in your posession:

There is a Zero-Tolerance policy for any violations of the Steam Subscriber Agreement and Online Code of Conduct. All accounts in a user's possession for any of the following activities will be suspended:

Piracy or Hacking
This includes using an unauthorized ("hacked") Steam client to access Steam, attempting to register fake CD Keys or attempting to register a CD Key which has been published on the internet.

Good. That's useful info for people that might want to use an older version. But if they don't have the setup.exe for an older version of the client....where do they get it? Do those olderversion websites still exist or have they turned into garbage full of ads, dead links, and false info like almost everything else too?

No.

The client VERIFIES its installation and checks for updates as soon as you start it.

This process cannot be disabled; though you can hide the pop-ups but the process is still going on in the background.

technically it is not a hacked client, it is an authorized old version, but this is exactly what I'm looking for and opened this thread.

If this client can get me in trouble, because if it is I will keep playing on this macbook the games I have on gog and ignore my steam library.

I wonder if I can get a solid answer from the support if this client can get me in trouble. Probably it is not a problem that I loged once (because I could have just logged in a forgoten machine and it will autoupdate soon for exampe, so nothing weird) but what if I keep loggin?

That article is literally a support article...what you think is allowed doesn't matter...what Valve thinks, does.

Is it worth risking a permanently locked account? You tell me.

I would definitely use one of the options that leads to contacting official support to contact them and ask them. Relying on what the community says might be a mistake that leads to bad things because there's no guarantee what anyone in the community says, even admin and moderators and developers, is accurate according to Valve / Steam policies. Very good idea to ask support since that's the only people who can give you a 100% accurate answer.

Actually...they may be able to suggest a way you can run the old games on the newest client.
I haven't dealt with support very often but the times I have they were very helpful and did everything they could to resolve my issue and satisfy my concerns and get me playing the games I wanted to play if it was in any way possible to have a positive result in what I wanted or was concerned about.
