I'm on PC and so were my friends and they were not in games. It simply appears as words to them. like ;mrb; that's what the mystery is.

If you're not using the chat beta or have used the launch parameters, it will not parse as it should.

I use the old steam chat/friends list. I don't intend to stop using them. I know I am not going to get used to them because I simply refuse what I consider to be an inferior layout for chat and friends. They're unnecessarily bulky and annoying to manage.

The emoticons' strings will not parse for the other users.

There's really nothing else that you can do other than removing the parameters.

So what, just remove the little : on each end?
Phantom Sep 23, 2018 @ 5:34am
No.

The emoticons need those in order to parse.

Otherwise, it's just text.

remove the old chat and use the new steam chat
Like I said, I don't want to use the new steam chat. It's horrible. It takes up way too much space on my screen and it's not discreet like the old chat. The UI update made using steam an overall worse experience and despite the amount of people who did not want the change to happen. They were all completely ignored and the change was forced on them anyway and then the old chat even become unsupported as to basically even further force the changes onto people over time. It's asinine. This update was totally unecessary and all it accomplished was ripping off discord while simutaneously creating new bugs on top of the old ones which were NEVER fixed.

I can't do anything about that.

I can only provide you with what i know based on my experience.

I already had a hunch it was because I was using old chat. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
Seriously though, there's no real reason the UI update needed to be made. It broke Steam layout skins completely and steam skins were the reason we did not need a "new look." Because at least back then you could individualize your client. I swear it's like Steam is becoming more and more Communist. Less individuality, less choice, and less say in the matter. Those who disagree are not taken into consideration.

Steam skins have to be updated by the author.

This happens almost every time there is a UI update.

I made my own skins so this was never necessarily an issue for me. Plus steamcustomizer.com made it extremely easy so really anyone could do it.
