Boxed CD games with steam codes
I know such things exist. So how does this work?
Do you have to register CD it on steam? If yes what's the point of the steam code then?
Or is it DRM free? if yes does that mean I can just use the code and sell it to someone? That would be weird..

Games that require Steam to play will have a code just for Steam.

The CD is basically a coaster.

Not all games are DRM free and most physical games that require Steam are not truly DRM free.

Each game key is 1 time use only.

You can not resell game keys you have used.

I think it's fair to point out that there are those out there that will register a Steam code and then sell the code they just registered on Steam to unsuspecting users. This, of course, totally screws over the unsuspecting user who loses money. Sometimes they lose a lot of money. This is why selling Steam keys is not supported by Valve

I believe you are very on point with adding that LowJack_VA1 as it probably has to do with his previous posts...

Selling the CD after using the key is basically fraud.

As Hotsause pointed out, the CD is worthless to a buyer once the Steam key has been used. The keys can't be used twice and you're defrauding an unsuspecting buyer who still gets screwed by purchasing a worthless CD they can't use because you used it. It is still fraud, even with selling the CD.

Edit:

I really hate seeing Steam boxed games at second-hand stores and even Goodwill and Salvation Army, because they are probably worthless. I've seen kids at these shops sometimes picking out a game and I warn the people in charge that Steam keys are one use only and that is going to be one disappointed child.

So the CD must be used with steam. And at the same time there are steam codes in the box, printed on a speretated piece of paper. What's the point then?

Ask the publisher that.

Most newer games have just the Steam client on them. Some smaller games have the game files on them but still need to be updated through Steam. Easier to just download/install all through Steam.

Suppose to help people with loading the game locally in theory, though the cd is generally out of date as soon as it’s printed.

I agree completely, personally I don't buy boxed versions anymore because i buy them in Steam Store sales which are better than any other store can sell them for. The Steam games I have on disk I use as proof of ownership of my account.

I keep the boxes. But I don't buy them as often unless they are SE types.

Most people that still go to physical stores to buy games insist on having something physically tangible from the purchase.

The box and CD in it are nothing more then a placebo to help them feel better about buying a little slip of paper with a few letters and numbers on it.

And that's really worrying because nowdays we do not own the games on steam, oftenly we don't even have an choice.
I see why people like buying physical games.

You never really "owned" them on Steam. You purchased a license for them.

Yeah I know, yet the games are sold pretty much at the full price. I wonder what if when you buy a game, there would be a popup that would clealry explain that you do not own the game.
