How hard is it to click and set the year to 19xx and click continue? It us jot like you have to enter your real birth date.

It's not hard.
But don't tell me that it wouldn't be better if we could set birth date in profile settings and never see that agecheck page again

Yes, but that wouldn't verify that whomever is looking at that game page has agreed that they are old enough to see that game page, there by absorbing Valve of liability.

Valve changed the age gate to be a session cookie now. It will no longer store the date you enter in after you log out.

I swear Valve/Steam go out of their way to make browsing and shopping the biggest pain in the ass that they possibly can. I bet they have a focus group that comes up with even new and better ways to annoy and disuade their user base from using their 'service'.

I came here to complain about this. This sucks! What is the point of this change?

Compliance to laws.

That's just stupid and very annoying. And this not only in a new game i enter, but also on those i already have in my library and needed age verification.

And not only in the browser but also in the steam app itself? On the browser...ok, but in the app?
This must be a bug, it's surreal.

which law requires validating one's age more than once per account?

Probably the same laws that require adult sites to ask the "Are you 18? Y/N" any time their session cookie expires. It provides a nominal barrier that a child would have to lie to get through, making the site not liable for anything said child might see.

Remember, Steam has to follow laws across every country they do business in. So they are going to make decisions that will comply with the most stringent of laws, and not make exceptions for those who live in places with more laid back laws.

I'll add my complaints to the list. It’s annoying as hell when you are on your private account and you have to verify how old you are everyday. Basically everyone lies because they can’t be bothered to put the whole date in there and any kid can just lie anyways so it fixes absolutely nothing. Then add the fact that the page breaks half the time and you get stuck unable to proceed. Good old steam has a name to live up to. Why not just put a disclaimer in there

Actually it does. If a parent got upset what their child saw on Steam and tried to sue, the first thing a lawyer would do is see if the child had to lie to get past an age gate. If they had too, they aren't going to take the case. It's essentially the "Wet Floor" sign of the internet. As long as it's there, the odds of a lawsuit drop to next to nothing.

Also, you only have to do it once per session. As long as you don't log out or close Steam, you should only have to do it one time.

I just came here to complain about this too, and saw this thread. This is getting really annoying. My age was already stored with Steam once, now I have to go thru this every time? Moronic! At this point you just made it easier to click year and set it to some arbitrarily distance year in the past and just click OK instead of actually selecting your age. But it's still extra clicks and that's annoying.
