Windows 98 Steam Client
Hi Guys

I recently build a Pentium III 1ghz with Voodoo 3 3000 and i want to install Steam because i purchase a lot of old games like Doom 1 and 2 and many others. How i can enjoy that games on the real machine and not with trick stuff on the modern machines.
To be fare they have to support the windows 98 as they Sell Old games FOR windows 98.
Any suggestions ?

Thanks you in advance.

The simple answer is you're not getting it on 98.

Without installing XP on that machine you can;t install the Steam client and your only other options are

1. Scrap the vintage build and get the games from GoG which have been tweaked to work on modern systems.

2. Obtain the games in retail form from ebay or other reseller.

I'm pretty sure my old 1996 Escom Pentium 133 that I used to play these games on is still in England in my parents' loft.

If you have the original discs they’re semi valuable on eBay
Steam is no longer supported on Windows 9x or lower. I'd rather suggest buying legacy game discs from eBay and installing them onto the computer.

So you want to install steam on a 98 machine just to download doom that comes bundled with dosbox but you don't want to play it using dosbox.. Why do you need steam for that?

If you own Doom on Steam then you can just copy the .wad file from any pc that can run steam and copy it to any device and get it running without steam.
That file is basically all the data for the game, all it needs is an engine to run it and those should be findable somewhere since all that stuff is open source.

If you own doom on steam you could play it on anything basically but not through steam.

And they are all compatible with XP or later, just like the client..

They sell Sega Genesis/Megadrive games on Steam also but that doesn't mean you can install Steam on a Genesis.

If you got old games on Steam then they probably don't require steam to run so copy them over and see what happens and if it doesn't work then start googling and see what happens.
