Low disk usage on steam with a SSD
Hi.

I got a new SSD recently (Samsung 750EVO 500go) and I try to download some game and weardly the disk usage is slower than my HDD 7200rpm...
And I don't think this is actualy normal...

So how can I get a highter Disk usage for my ssd ?

Many thanks !

well the disk usage can not be influenced by you directly. If you download slow the disk usage will be slow either. the disk usage can go up to higher if something in your PC actually requiring it but not on its own.
Also it depends on the way you formatted it (GPT / NTSF) and what type your PC is using (UEFI or Legacy BIOS).
Addionally it depends on your data cable (IDE/SATA II/SATA III).

I'm stumped too, so of those things in the ()'s which one is best for older machines and which one for newer machines, or does it work like that? I'm going to change my computer a bit so of those three, I can change it to the right one...post it like "Older stuff works well with this configuration while newer stuff works better with this one"

Well to use full performance of SSD'S you should have it run always in SATA III as SATA II is not fast enough to use its full potencial and will cut down the speed to any fast HDD. Unless you have a NVMe SSD like Samsung 960 where you need a M.2 Socket for and run it in PCI-e 3.0 x4 mode.

However you have a SATA III (6 Gbps = ~550MB/s)

Formatting should be done as NTSF while you cant chose between GPT or MBR. This is depending on how your system is setup. GPT only unlocks the full potencial of the SSD if run as OS drive but that is depending on the BIOS. IF you using BIOS in legacy mdoe as every older hardware then you cant run in GPT only MBR. You need to run in UEFI mode to use GPT.

Hey, thanks for answering !

So i'm actualy a SATA III and a BIOS but I dont realy know the way my ssd is formatted.

In a other hand, i've been doing a DiskMark test and it says 500mbs~ so i don't know what to conclude

500MB/s (MegaByte) or 500 Mbps (Megabit). 500MB/s is normal for SATA III.

How will you if you can run in UEFI mode before doing so as not to bork your system?

Removing all drives, switch to UEFI mode and then reconnect the drives and clean install windows if necessary.

One other thing, do you use Windows 10?

but what if my disk usage was 1.8 m/s and suddenly drops to 10 kp/s without return !
If the download rate shows normal, and the download finishes as expected by that,
at least there is nothing to worry.

Your internet connection can influence results when downloading, even the strength of your CPU plays a part in both.

Disk Read/Write also depends on the size of the files that are being downloaded/installed.

Download Crystal DiskMark and do the benchmark for it
Post the results and then we'll know whats going on with the SSD
