why does steam think my form factor is a laptop?
not that it matters, but it is mildly annoying as far as accuracy goes.

my system is a desktop, not a laptop, yet the steam sysinfo thinks it's a laptop


Computer Information:
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Model: Z97X-UD5H
Form Factor: Laptop <--- it's not!

Don't worry about it, Steam is just stupid. Either that or Windows is stupid and it thinks it's installed on a laptop.

Check Systeminfo and see what it says under System Summary > Platform Role.

If it is any consolation, Steam thinks I am not the OEM of my own self built PC:
Computer Information:
Manufacturer: To Be Filled By O.E.M.
Model: To Be Filled By O.E.M.

If you want Steam to think you are the OEM you will have to edit the OEM information in the registry.

Currently it will be undefined, it's always like this on a system which you installed the OS on. Unless there is malware in the firmware which automatically changes this crap that is.

Because you are using a laptop motherboard.

For all intents and purposes you are using laptop hardware so regardless of case you ARE using a laptop in terms of power.
OP is using a normal desktop mobo.

There is a reason it doesn't support anything past the 5th generation for processors.

... Z97 is a high-end, 4th generation Intel Core, consumer chipset exclusively used in desktops. There may be a few laptops using it but those are $3000 mobile desktops with a battery and screen glued to it.

"Two channel DIMMs", thanks for confirming you have no idea what you are talking about. DIMMs per channel is not the maximum amount of DIMMs the mobo will take, it's the max amount it will run in a single channel. Two modules of memory in a single channel is refered to as dual channel, any modern consumer level machine be it a laptop or desktop supports up to two modules per channel and not a single one more.

This chipset only supports 4th generation Core CPUs. This is common for Intel chipsets, Intel always drops support after one or two generations. Also, the amount of CPU generations a chipset has seen does in no way tell us if it's a laptop or desktop chipset. Generally a new CPU generation is accompanied by a new series of chipsets aswell.


I am not even going to call you an amateur, an amateur would have at least a basic understanding on a subject which you clearly lack.

it was the chipset/mobo used in the 2014 PC gamer dream machine... it's not cheap, or amateur, and certainly not a laptop.

To be fair, I highly doubt you manufactured any hardware in the PC so you are not the OEM...
