Launch Steam with “-compat” as a command line option. Eg, right click the shortcut for steam, then where the shortcut properties has a path to Steam.exe, add a space and “-compat” after the “.exe”

This will help you to bypass this problem

If you have a laptop with an AMD card use this fix

"-compat" fix worked once. Then it doensn't help anymore. Dumb Valve...

-compat didn't work and my client is a full black screen. Just the reloadable pages below the Steam options at the top. I have access to; Steam View Friends Games Help the direction <-- --> (arrows), and the main headings; STORE LIBRARY COMMUNITY (Steam Name). My Library of Games page works just fine, I can see everything.
I have a Nvidia GTX 1080p, so this AMD issue is now within the Nvidia arena as well.
Can anyone or does anyone have a solution for this? I have Googled this issue for weeks now and perused the Steam board to no avail.

Luck & Loot all.

Set steam in low power mode (amd catalyst) worked for me. Good luck pal.

For people like me having similar issues, the only way to fix it was resetting my Steam client settings . To do it, you have to change a windows register entry.

** IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING,JUST DON'T. **

You're advised. To do so, choose the approach you're more comfortable with.

===
Approach one - direct register update.

- Run regedit.exe
- Find the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam folder
- Edit the "StartupMode" key to 0
- Save
- Restart Steam. It'll take a minute to start, then ask user and pass, then you might log again.

====
Approach two - .reg file.

I noticed that there's a tip in https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/828935672345834955/ ... I'll add it here as well, if you consider it easier. Haven't tested it myself, I changed the register directly.

Make a textfile and copy this into it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam] "StartupMode"=dword:00000000

Then save that file with the ending *.reg (eg: bigpicture.reg) and start it. A warning pops up if you're really sure and after accepting that you should be good to go.
