Force a check for game updates?

I'll often boot up/wake up my PC, go into Steam and check if anything's updating, if not I'll start a game (typically PUBG) but more often than not I'll get an in-game error that I need to update it. So I exit out and check Steam Library>Downloads and there's nothing happening. If I wait a variable amount of time something may start and also forcing a Steam client update check sometimes seems to help (that might just be coincidental though).
What I really want is just to force an updates check on a specific game so I can do that before launching the game and not waste 5-10 minutes but I can't see a way of doing it - is it possible?

Thx this did it for me was updating SWTOR then steam crashed then no update, did it and updating again thx a lot
