status on steam?

what the heck does the "absent" status on steam mean and where does it come from?

There is. It literally means what it says: The user is away. It gets set after a while of inactivity.

According to any (English) dictionary, "away" and "absent" are pretty similar in meaning. You could even call them synonyms.

But it's not the word for it used on Steam like OP claimed. That's implying OP isn't talking about Snooze in the first place.

Its implying that the OP has non-English as his Steam language and his own language has a word that translates both to "away" and "absent" (i.e. the German "abwesend") and when translating that term to English for the forum, he picked a word thats linguistically right and not the one precise term you expect because, as i said, the OPs Steam language isnt English. Thats what it implies.

Iv never once in 4 years of being on steam seen the word "Absent" on my friends list. Yes it does mean "Away" But iv never seen that specific word on steam for anything... The "Absent" Status does not exist on steam. Atleast not to my knowledge.

Ive seen "abwesend" several times, which translates as "absent" into English. How do you knkw the OP has their Steam language set to English and not, well, an other language?

If they saw "away", it would he the same. Youre mixing two topics here. One is the linguistic topic, the other is understanding.
The OP seem not to know what the "away" status means. Which, if the OP never dealt with ICQ or Skype, is perfectly understandable if you havent set the status yourself yet. Theres alao no setting akin to ICQs "Away after X minutes" so yup, the OP seems simply not to know what the status means and thats perfectly understandable as theres litetally no documentation on Steam about that.
The topic of you (and Gwait) assuming that everybody has their Steam set to English is a different one entirely and should be discussed separately.

Right click your name in the top of the friends list. Set your status :D
