Game won't stop "running"

I'm pretty sure for a few days now, one of my games, that I've only gotten at most 5 hours on, now has a little over 200 hours on it, it's not open and I can't delete it because it's open. Can somebody please help me?

I have recently ran into this problem as well. I solved it by shutting down my laptop, which worked.

I only need to restart my laptop to fix it. shutting it down isn't necessary

hey i need help i cannot play my game in steam if i try to shut it down on task manager and go back on it it will not let me play bc it still says running when its not

This happened to me with cyberpunk so my 5 gigs of ram shot up to 9 randomly and when I checked that was the criminal

This is happening to me too if you have a solution for this issue it would be a big help. Closing steam bootstrapper in task manager doesn't work btw.

What I did was open steam, go into task manager and stop steams task

I already marked the post as answered. a solution I use when it happens is to just restart my computer. it's annoying, but that's what I use to fix it

Pretty much any VR game I quit is still registered as "running". I have tried restarting steam, didn't work. Logging out of windows & back in, didn't work. Shutting down the 'gameoverlayui.exe' in task manager, doesn't exist. Shutting down everything VR related, didn't work. Shut down the games via task manager, not there.
I even did all of the above without success. The only thing that works is a hard reset after each & every VR game I play. I don't have problems with any other Steam software. It's only all of the VR stuff that I have to reboot & it is a consistent bug that shows up every single time I play in VR.

All these solutions, but not a fix. Why does the program stay running after I exit? How do I stop it from doing that. I have a couple of games that do that. Usually, exiting Steam works, but that is a workaround, not a solution.

Download a program known as Process Explorer, find and right-click steam.exe and select Kill Process Tree. This will kill all processes and services associated with Steam, including games.

Yes, sometimes, you have to go that far.

Hi i have the same problem, the solution i use for now is to restart the steam.exe prosses through prosses explorer. u can find it at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer for me terminating any prosses is just a click away

Touched with that issue couple days ago.
Problem came with the penultimate Miscreated game update.
Tried / tested ALL the way possible ways, that have only found in google...
Nothing helped.
(Funniest thing, is that when you restart steam, it's still showing up in steam, that game is running.
So and if steam is fully turned off... Side programs as Discord for example, even AFTER 1h since steam were turned off, still are showing, that the game is running )
1 thing that helps, is PC reboot...
So I've concluded, that it's probably game providers glitch...
And steam client as it self, is absolutely irrelevant.
Cause all others games are closing just fine, and have no problems with them.

shut down steam by going to steam on the top yell see settings but there is also steam so click on steam and then click exit and it well restrat steam you wont be logged out and it doesnt do anything
