Running game deleted executable, cannot reinstall (no permission, or something)?
Dunno if this is the place for it, but i got a REALLY cryptic, difficult technical issue preventing me from installing and playing a game... And i couldn't find a tech-support forum, so hope this place will do?

For some reason, i can't play a certain game on my laptop due to the .exe litterally being shut down and deleted after running the game, and trying to recover the missing .exe file just gives me an error of sorts, saying the download/install was paused, the reason for the download pausing being some kind of locked package/acces thing, presumably steam lacking acces to the folder (even when i run steam as Admin).

Trying to put the .exe file of the game from my PC to my Laptop just gave me a permission error saying i wasn't authorized to alter this folder or copy things to it. Despite the fact i'm using an admin account. (And yes, the game does install/play fine on my PC, as far as i'm aware. It even recently updated without an issue, for my PC anyway. The laptop issue persisted.)

Also very oddly, it ONLY does this in response to trying to copy in the EXACT, named .exe file, if i rename it and copy it in, it'll take it. If i try to rename it back, it won't take it, saying i lack permission. If i try to alter the permissions of who owns the folder, it won't take it. So for some reason it has beef with that specific exe file. All the other game files are fair game, it seems. Only the .exe file and folder itself seem protected.

Even weirder: I tried 3 different hard disks, more or less. This was the process every time:
1> Install game for first time on hard disk, install succesful, can play game fine.
2> Close game, try playing again... The .exe file gets deleted, game process has been terminated shortly after executing it.
3> Attempting to validate files makes it loop endlessly in a validation process.
4> I try to simply play the game, it tries to collect the missing .exe file in response, but every time the download is interrupted mentioning something about package locked/restricted. Presumably corruption or bugs or whatever prevent proper acces.
5> Game is now 100% unplayable on the current hard drive. Installing it leads to part 4 now. Manual insertion of the game files won't work anymore since Steam considers the game in need of an update.

This was repeated for D Drive, then C Drive, and then i tried a USB drive, and the same effect showed up.
But instead of attempting step 3 or 4, i manually put in a new .exe file by renaming the folder, putting it in, renaming the folder back to normal, and starting the game on steam.

My attempts at fixing this included things like terminating the task manager process named "ifx", or "ixf" or whatever it was called that managed permissions, and i tried giving full permission/acces of the folder to my account and whatnot in the game folder's file permission properties. And it's probably not a issue of the windows defender/firewall/virus scanner/etc blocking it since STEAM ITSELF litterally has no acces to complete the installation, which is probably not a common feature of any of those programs...

Hope there's some miracle working tech-wizard who knows how to solve this problem, since it sounds really, really nasty. Especially if it starts spreading to my OTHER games! Fortunately none of the other ones seem to have this issue.

What's your anti-virus? Sounds a lot like an over-protective anti-virus, you can try whitelisting your Steam folder.

Hm, it did occassionally took offense to my game's exe file, but ussually just listing it as a potential threat with an annoying pop-up which i could opt to ignore (and even list it as harmless), it never went as far as do this! But i'll look into that later, i guess, gotta relax a bit from all that stressful technical BS with another game...

Huh, thanks, that did seem to make a difference! Haven't fully tested this yet, but so far so good!

I was able to change the write-only/read-only permission without some annoying lack of permission error, and i could even paste in and overwrite the .exe as a quick test! Neither did the .exe file get deleted upon running it two times in a row.

Guess it really was the AVG virus scanner being an ass, i should feel lucky, i guess, atleast its not some hardware or harddrive corruption issue. Now it's all whitelisted if it's a steam game folder, hope that covers it...
