They do. - https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/
But being linux based game choices are limited.
Try dual-booting with SteamOS and see if you can play games with that that crashed your system with Windows. That, at least, will help determine if you've got malfunctioning hardware.
The prevailing wisdom, and my advice, is that your goal should be to get your computer working right with Windows.
- Linux is nice for niche cases when you have to do something Windows can't (we use an Ubuntu bootable USB drive at my IT company sometimes when customer computers are acting too weird to fix with a Windows solution or repair disk).
- Windows is nice for people who want their computers to do as many things as possible.
Your GPU is really too old to be reliable or even adequate for all but the most modest/old games. Replace it ASAP. If you can't, monitor the temps with something like PrecisionX. It could just be overheating. Consider cleaning the heatsink with compressed air and maybe even reapplying the thermal compund. Plenty of instructional videos on YouTube for that.
Also, make sure your CPU isn't overheating. Use something like CoreTemp to monitor the temp. The solution to your problem could be as simple as replacing the heatsink and/or reapplying thermal compound.
EDIT: You report only certain games cause crashes. That probably wouldn't be explained by overheating, of course, unless they're the only demanding ones you play.
I still recommend you do the above heat maintenance on your system.
