"error communicating with the steam servers"
this just started only recently, about a week or so ago. . .

everytime I put my computer to sleep and then I wake it up and go back into the steam client, I can't access my profile or my messages or my wishlist anymore.

like right after waking it up, I will go back into steam and my wishlist won't be there and when I try to access my messages, I get "error communicating with the steam servers"

I'll check the website and steam will be 100% up and running, it's only me having a problem.

I have a kind of solution, all I do is exit steam and then relaunch the client and then it works.; but I never had to do that before!

I mean, yeah, exiting and relaunching only takes 5 seconds, but why is this happening now?

I've got zero faith in Steam Support - I've never gotten an answer out of them that wasn't copy/paste.

Go "Steam -> settings -> web browser -> delete web browser cache". Hope that helps.

Having this issue, doing this immediately made me visible to the steam client. I don't yet know if its a permanent fix or has to be done every sleep/resume cycle but this is faster than logging out/back in. Thanks for the tip cyb666.

just thought I would mention that I immediately tried that as soon as I saw the suggestion. . . and it fixed nothing.

Had to do it again to read this. It needs doing each time you send pc to sleep but it works immediately when I do it.

I had this problem occur yesterday for the first time.

I've been using Steam and the sleep function for years without any problem until now. Restarting steam worked but it's not an ideal sollution.

My Windows 10 OS recently updated to the latest April Update, maybe that has something to do with it.

Same issues here. It appears that I'm logged in, and in fact, I can play any game on my list. But if I try to use the 'explore' feature in the store, it tells me to log in, even though my username appears at the top and my library is showing. Screwy.
My only choice, at the moment, is to log out and then log back in and all is well.

Try cvb666's fix. I was having the same problem and a delete of the cache fixed it for me.

For me It doesn't. You have to leave the pc in sleep for a while to reproduce the issue, if you put it in sleep and wake up just after a few moments, steam works correctly.

this started for me also about a week ago and it's driving me crazy. at least i am not alone!

Since updates in March, Steam has had all kinds of small but annoying bugs. This is the worst state I've seen the steam client in.

if I have to go in and clear the cache again and again every time I wake the computer back up, then I may as well just be doing what I have been doing, which is exiting steam and restarting it, which also works.

neither of those is a real solution though.

Finally I got a decent answer from steam support.
They are aware of this bug, and suggest to watch this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/8gnllv/steam_is_apparently_drunk_again/

There are a couple of workaround solutions as clear browser cache or killing steamwebhelper.exe, but the most important thing is that they are aware of this bug and looking into it.

See ... now if they said that when you first submitted a ticket there'd be less fuss from our side.
