The game comes in 2 downloads - The multiplayer only download which is 51GB and the single player story.

I only have the multiplayer installed just now, Can I play online without the single player being downloaded or do I need both of them to play online ?

Its taken me just over 2 days to download the 51GB section due to the steam servers being awful.

The other download is 16 GB so that would take another day which will be a pain in the ass if I need both downloads just to play the multiplayer.

Since the game is in two applications, you should be able to launch MP without SP. I have BO2's campaign installed and it runs fine even without MP or ZM. The reverse should be true.
