How can I tell if my existing games will run in Linux?
Hi all, Firstly I did do a search using the above as the search term but got nothing. Hence the post here. Sorry if it has been covered. If so, links to relevant threads would be appreciated!

I am thinking (seriously) of migrating to Linux as I am getting really annoyed with Windwos 10...BUT this big thing I need to know is if I need to re-buy all my current Steam games to be able to play them under Linux. I have seen the list of compatible games but I cannot tell how the games in my library (even though they ARE listed in the Steam list) are compatible. There does not seem to be any mark or notation next to the names.

Thanks

If you see hardware requirements for Linux, it's a supported game, otherwise it's not.

Give it the URL to your Steam profile then use the Linux/SteamOS filter. It doesn't work with private profiles, so you will need to change that first.

The steam calculator, has an option for products/Linux OS.
You can get a rough idea of the number of items which say they will run on Linux.
(but you would need to set your profile to public, you can change it back afterwards)

"Do I need to re-buy all my current Steam games to be able to play them under Linux"
No. If you own it and it supports Linux it's yours to run on (Windows, Linux and if supported Mac)

If you only have a handful of games you can cheak the store pages. There is a "circle of confusion" near the buy it now box.

supplementary Q: What is the concensus for Steam Games under W.I.N.E. ?

Entirely depends on the game. Some work fine with WINE, others don't.

You can always check the WineHQ website to see what does and does not run in Wine. You can also find how-to guides there for games which do require some tinkering to get running.

I don’t like Wine, and don’t use it so I might be out of touch.

I rate Wine as a 7/10, and largely based on Platinum and Gold ratings.
It’s a great secret weapon and a handy tool to tackle certain things: Steam is most certainly a prime target!

When Wine works it works a treat. I would say that Wine and GOG titles would be a better mix. Because Steam updates, and the games are updated generally I feel it is too hit and miss. The maintainers have an impossible task trying to test and re-test. I found wine really more effort than I wanted to put in at the end of a day’s work.

If you are only talking about like 3 games? Then 1 game per ‘bottle’ -Complete with it’s own Steam Client! :( … Can be manageable. There might be better ways? I found it a pain to configure things.
If you have a lot of games you are better to dual boot (IMO). But Windows 10 is 11.5GB which would be rather a lot of Wine bottles!!!

If you have a little patience, over a year you will be able to pick up most games with a very good discount. Your mileage may vary, I found enough interesting games on Linux to start with. End of the day it’s the same client, click the install button to download and install, click the play button to launch the game. Linux is REALLY REALLY easy to use, and looks like these:
