(Edit: I don't know if PS controllers have wired compatibility or not, but I definitely recommend using a wired controller)
X = Square
Y = Triangle
A = X
B = Circle
The worst and most confusing prompt is when X appear as you go for X os the DS3/4. The other 3 are easier to get used to. Given a few days to a week and it should be second nature. If you are struggling there are ways to make it easier.
1. Download and image of a DS3/4 controller then edit the image. Simple Paint will work. Create a filled in circle over each of the Square, Circle, Triangle and X buttons. Then put the corresponding X,Y,A and B in bold over then. Save the image. Either print it, transfer to phone/tablet or display it on a second monitor. Now you can glance at it while in game quickly.
Or
2. Write the XYAB letters on small stickers and stick the to the top of your DS3.
