New update screwed up my nintendo switch controller
It's nice valve to add compatibility with switch controller, but why do you have to be so selfish to lock it up so it doesn't work anywhere else than steam once it's launched ?

To sum it up, before patch, no problem, my switch pro controller was configured on steam with the generic controller assistant, so I could use it with my all steam games, and other programs like non steam games and emulators.

But now, since 17 may patch, it's either :
* the new switch controller assitant is on, my controller works fine on steam, but is completly disabled outside of it, as said like with emulators, retroarch etc...
* generic controller assistant is on, works fine on non steam programs, but most steam games layout are f*cked up like binding of isaac with only d-pad recognized, ds2 having LT/RT/R3/L3/start/select all messed around or ds3 not even working at all.

I've seen some people complaining around about it but with no solution for now, do you guys know what's going on and undo this mess ?

TO make it work outside of Steam, configure the "Desktop" setting for Controllers within Steam. Yes Steam Client must run for that to keep working. Otherwise you'll have to find 3rd party software that will do it. As Origin and Uplay don't have Steam's level of Controller support.

Switch and other controllers (aside from maybe DS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One) would most likely have to be custom configured to work properly as far as the exact Key-Binds and such. Configure a Controllers (yes only ever plug in one controller at a time) and then configure it and then save its config to your Steam Account.

Why do people not buy a Controller that is actually just plug & play on PC; instead of complaining about things that don't work 100% of the time.

I tried different layout for desktop configuration, but nothing work, even if I assign keyboard keys, outside of steam, the controller is completly irresponsive until i close steam.

Once u change a Controller's setup, save it and restart Steam Client all together, yes always do that.

What OS are you running?

Is Steam Client opt'ed into the Beta, or not?

I've tried different layouts, and some works on some applications, like up key from a keyboard work for firefox but not retroarch etc... it's a real mess so far.

Okay, I've tried a few thing, but this update is completly broken, who thought it was okay to sort it like that ?

When pluged with usb it's even worst on other programs, it's pressing all the buttons really fast and going ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this is really anoying.

Wipe out Steam Client; do this every few months.
It's very simple to do. Do you need me to explain how? No there is no uninstall or game wipes involved. However, never "uninstall" Steam.

I installed steam like two weeks ago, so IDK if it would solve it, pretty sure it's valve just releasing a very bad update, i saw other people having the same issues. But if you think it can help to clean steam client, I'd like to knopw how to do that, many thanks.

I also noted that I can't manually reassign keys in the general controller parameters, confirming it's just a bad update that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the layouts.

Just wipe out Steam and see if a bad config is to blame.

Go to your Steam folder; delete everything inside, EXCEPT for the following

Steam.exe (application)
DepotCache (folder)
Skins (folder)
SteamApps (folder)
UserData (folder)
#SSFN (hidden files that start with this)

And do not delete anything within these folders. Just what you see in the root Steam folder; the files and folders there.

Also delete everything inside here:
C:\Users\#YourUserName\AppData\Local\Steam

Now right click Steam.exe > click Run As Admin

Steam redownloads the very latest stable branch version and loads up normally.
Once it does, properly Exit Steam Client fully.

Now go to Properties for every single EXE file that is in \Steam and also \Steam\Bin
And disable "full screen optimization" and apply to each.

Now load up Steam, again via the right click > Run As Admin (yes do this every single time you launch ANY game client) Make a Desktop Shortcut so it's easier. Never have game clients in OS Startups.

Well, just did everything as listed (thanks for the step by step guide), and nothing has changed, now I can pretty much confirm steam by modifiying the controller layout is breaking it for everything else.

Ok, now opt into the Steam Beta and see if that addresses the issues.
As we've need that in the past when it came to Controller based issues/changes.

Well, there is better. If configured like a keyboard, like B button is the "V" key from the keyboard, it is now recognized by other programs.

But, If configure my desktop setup like a controller (like a normal controller, like xbox-one for example), it is still not recognized.

I guess I will have to wait for valve to patch it, I'm clueless now :/
