Steam games downloading at abysmal speed
Hey guys, I'm currently downloading Ark: Surival Evovled again, just a 21GB download.

I have a 250Mbps connection, both up and down.

Steam in the past has been more than happy to download at 20+MB/s as it should, but as of the last few days I can't get consistent downloads on steam of past 2-5MB/s, even when downloading the rocket league beta of only 3.5GB to my SSD, I couldn't get anything past around 5MB/s.

My router is a Nighthawk ac1750, my computer is hardwired with CAT5.

When I downloaded Warface from the stand alone launcher around 4 days ago, I got 20MB/s+ stable, while my brother played battlefield 4 on his PS4 (Also hardwired) and he had no connection or ping issues at all.

R5-1500x @3.9Ghz

16gb ram (2x8) 3000Mhz

GTX 750 (Non TI... My 970 had a mosfet short lol)

Ark is being installed on an HDD, though the rocket league beta was downloading to my SSD. Also warface was downloading to my HDD.

Yes, I've tried changing my download server a couple times, I've tried clearing my download cache. And no, I'm in no way being confused by a network conversion rate. Any help is much welcome, thanks guys. :steamhappy:

P.S Sorry if this isn't in the right area, please redirect me to the correct sub forum if this is an issue.

Trying siging out and back in and see if it goes back up steam does this for me all the time i get my full speed for about 10 min then it throttles me back to like 5mb from 250mb

You can try power cycling your modem/router

you can also do a speed test at www.speedtest.net to make sure its only a Steam issue and not an all around speed issue.

And you should always only install one game at a time.

Yeah, part of clearing download cache requires a re-signin, also every server change requires a steam restart.

Side note: Are you trying to get the 970 repaired?

Maybe, but I don't think that's the issue. (Might as well give it a shot)

I'd love to repair the 970 but due to my location and labor costs, it would cost more to fix than it's worth to me. I'd sell it to someone that's in the position to fix it though, so if you're interested we can talk what would be fair. (I figure maybe $70 for the card and $15 or so for shipping to the US, given most people that would want to repair it would have a repair cost of a few cents really).

Yeah, nothing else is using my connection, Speedtest.net does show proper net speeds of 240Mbps, I'd imagine if I tried another 3d party standalone launcher (World of warships, Warface etc) I'd see well over 20MB/s. I also have the steam ports set to QOS highest priority in my router.

Do a speedtest and try a different Steam Download Server from the client settings.
Make sure your NIC/LAN is actually set to 1000mbps and not 100

For Steam download servers, I have found Columbus, Ohio and Vietnam to be ultra reliable.

It also might be that the OP is on a metered connection.

As of now it seems fine again, I have no idea what could've been wrong, but it lasted a few days and only seemed to affect steam. My connection was perfectly fine on other apps/launchers, and I haven't changed anything local on my system that could have anything to do with the throttling.
