Whats the darkest, most hopeless and terrifying sh*t you've ever played? One that filled you with a mixture of existential dread, hopelesness of a stranded being in a desolate place and anxious fear.
There's another game that's just not coming to me right now that hits that note. If I end out thinking of it I'll post it.
Abuse! You reminded me of that one. Yes, that game had a bit of that feeling too.
It is like Quake in 2D.
I guess Quake is pretty close to what I'm looking for. Dark, Gruesome, a little Lovecraftian. Nobody knows what's going on, one guy inbetween dimensions where monsters are even worse in the next one. No big "Hooray!" for his win, no happy end. Pure Dread.
A bit of it makes me think of Unepic, as well. Which has some of the feel I think you're talking about, though it plays a lot slower than Abuse.
What does look a lot like this game, however, is Iji. Iji is freeware, too, so you might as well give that a try.
There's also Alien III for SNES, which looks vaguely similar but I think think it's a bit meh.
(The gameplay in Abuse also reminded me of Halloween Harry and Duke Nukem 2, but I am also somewhat meh on both those games, at least for your request.)
There's also some more recent metroidvania games like The Fall, which I tried playing but haven't quite gotten the hang of yet. And Dreaming Sarah, but that game is more about the surrealism than the horror.
Although, then again - you've got flashback and another world are somewhat dark and stranded'ey.
