Steam games crash after launch
I have a minimal setup, running Windows 10 on a small hard drive. But I only play two games right now, Payday 2 and Garry's Mod, neither of which take up a significant amount of space. This is a new computer running both of these games for the first time. On my old computer, running Windows 10 with a larger hard drive almost filled, both of these games ran fine along with maybe 6 others I played with regular frequency.

Problem: As soon as I start up the game, it will simply crash and close out without warning or notification within 30 seconds of reaching the home screen of that game.

Cause: Is this an issue with Steam, with my games, or with my computer?

Solution: I have already tried reinstalling the games twice. I have turned off my computer several times. I have logged in and out of Steam more times than I can count. I do not have any antivirus software downloaded, only the base Windows Defender which has never restricted my gaming in the past. Any other suggestions for how to remedy this problem?

Begin by making sure that Windows is up to date, and all the latest drivers are downloaded from the manufacturers websites. It will also be helpful to include your computer specifications here.

Go to:
  • Open Run (Windows Key+R)
  • Type in dxdiag
Under the 'System' tab, you will find processor, ram, os and system model.
Under the 'Display' tab, you will find the graphics card.
