Steam chat opening in far top left corner.
It opens so far up there it's clipping into the side of the monitor, and even when I move/resize them, if I close the window and it's reopened, it'll start up there again. What can I do?

Just drag the bottom of the window to the bottom of the screen and it should fullscreen the window allowing you to move it afterwards.

I can move it out of the way, that's not the problem, the problem is that even if I move it, it doesn't save position and will open in that corner again no matter what.

Apologies for not understanding the issue. I never really experienced windows not saving the position on the monitor but one thing that pops in my head is if you keep the window fullscreened, close it and open it again, does it revert back to this position?

The config file containing the overlay position is at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\resource\styles\gameoverlay.styles

(On a default x64 Steam installation.)

A line in there should read:

Notifications.PanelPosition "BottomRight"

Presumably yours reads "TopLeft" for some reason?

I would advise backing this file up first if you intend to modify it.

It's not related to the overlay; basic, out of game chat windows appear at the far top left, as opposed to in the middle of the screen like they normally do.

Having the same problem myself. I did notice that it's been since I updated NVidia drivers. I see this problem relating to that somehow...

Right-click the Steam icon on your desktop and select Properties at the bottom of the context menu. (If Steam isn’t on your desktop, search for it in Windows, right-click the application, and select Open file location.) It should open with the Shortcut tab in view. You want to edit the Target path, which points to where you’ve installed Steam. Leave all the information that’s already filled out as-is, but at the end of the string, add a space and then this text:

-nochatui -nofriendsui -silent

It still happens with recent releases. To reproduce it, launch a game. Press Shift+TAB to open overlay. Now your friends chat window appears on top-left corner eventhough there is sufficient space next to main overlay area. Very annoying.
