When you click on a group, its page should open up. on the right hand side near the name it will have either two of the following:

a lock symbol with "Invite only"
Or a green "Join group" button

the invite only one means you have to ask a admin or moderatior of the group to invite you, or it may just be a private group. If its green, go ahead and click it.
