Sorting in Games "Library"
Recently, the Sorting Mechanism of my Games Library has been changed (irreversibly)
after a steam update. I had the Option to list:
my "Favorites" first, in alphabetical Order
then other "installed" games, in alphabetical Order
then other "uninstalled" games, in alphabetical Order.
This is in "List View"

Now its sorted after last played - I do understand that this sort order
has some significance for steam itself, as i have begrudgingly accepted
any online service is greedily hoarding my data, analyzing and potentially
earning money with it on the sly.
All i am asking is to have the above sort order back, for it makes sense.
Especially stupid is, that games that aren' t even installed are strewn
into the listing - clearly i don't wanna play these, right now.

Which view are you using?

Games Details?

Games List?

Games Grid?

not sure how to change the actual ordering of it all, but, you can filter it to show only games that are installed and you can still contact support (?). you could also use something like Depressurizer to organize your games into categories how you like.

Caelon, Sorry dude. i do see the potential of causing a flame here. but may i please ask that future contributions to this thread are by people that actually know something? If you start your post with

you must be aware yourself (on some level) that its not gonna be all that helpful? lets keep threats as short as possible - they turn out to be more helpful that way.

Alright. Had a click around the UI and found that what you want (as I understand, Favorites > Installed > Uninstalled, Alphabetically) is actually pretty easy to set up. Will edit in screenshots momentarily.

First, to order things Alphabetically, click where it says "Games" at the top of the list. This will change the sort between A-Z and Z-A, as indicated by the small arrow next to the word.

As far as Catagories (Installed / Uninstalled) I couldn't find a way to do that automatically but you can categorize them yourself. Right click, set catagories, type the name (Installed) then Add Catagory.

From there you can just right click any game, add catagory, and tick the box next to the name of the one you want.

Any games you don't add into a catagory will just be sorted alphabetically into "Games' below Favorites and Installed.

How much of a pain this is gonna be tpo set up really depends on how many games you keep installed at a time. If its alot, I'd probably reccomend using a third-party app like Depressurizer.

Also! Just remembered, for threads to be the most helpful, when you find an adequate solution you can mark your topic as solved and it puts the solution you select right under your question.

to Caelon: Oh, wow...thanks for all the effort and the work you put into this excellent answer.
This is an excellent workaround, for people having few games installed.
Also sorry for the somewhat salty response earlier.

to steam:
Still, i would like to keep this open for a bugfix by steam. As mentioned i did buy quite a lot of games via steam and i resent being punished for that by having to install an addon and the fiddeling that comes with that.
The Steam Client HAD the exact feature set that was helpful and they willfully removed it. It should be as easy to put it back in...code usually doesn't age that fast.
<SIGH>....i know this is gunna be a fight versus windmills, but i am sick and tired of updates in Software Development that don`t bring added value, but only do things different...and usually worse....i would like somebody with a working brain, employed by steam R&D to take a look at this...
Software is supposed to make our lives easier people.

superflous addenum: the original sorting mechanism kinda made my eyes water with joy a lil bit, tbh - steam was about the only piece of software that supported hirarchical, prioritized ordering right off the bat. It made me think there's smarts at work there...and then you people removed it. It`s a bit of dagger into the heart of reason to see it go.

Yeah. It's a bit of a tedious workaround, but once you get into the swing of it it's not *too* terrible. And eh, everyone's a little salty sometimes. Glad I could find a solution, even if it's not perfect.

still boggles the mind that valve/steam tosses a perfectly valid, existing solution and replaces it with something halfbaked that requires a lot of work. I guess as long as they were in a fight to become the major online distributor for games they cared about the users, now that thats done - they came from microsoft after all....

suck

Someone is overthinking a bit much I think.

The alphabetical ordering system of games was never removed. You probably accidentally clicked "Last Played" in list view.

Let it go dude, and relax a bit. If you don't want to see other options for the listing, just use "detail view" as that is always alphabetical, and you can still use custom categories and favorites.

Uhm, ok - i figured it out...with that Grimlocks hint....
What i needed to do to fix this:
Listing was ordered by last played:

1. right-click "Games" Collumn header of the Games List
2. deselect "last played"
3. mousover "LIBRARY" - select Tools
4. mousover "LIBRARY - select Games again

strictly speaking Step 2 should have done the trick, but nothing happened to the
sorting order (I even tried a steam restart). Also pretty sure i never "misclicked" the
"last played" option on, but what the heck...
Anyway, Thanks to King Grimlock and Caelon
