Steam seems to think I'm using an Xbox controller?
Whenever I launch a game, it gives me a UI as if I'm using an Xbox 360 controller (A,B,Y,X,LT,RT, etc). Thing is, even if I do use an Xbox remote, it doesn't respond. If I use my keyboard, I just have to guess at the keys until something happens.

How do I get Steam to load games for keyboard + mouse (preferably w/o reinstall)?

Try going to Steam > Settings>controllers>general controller settings> and uncheck all the checkboxes and see what that does.

Depending on the game, you have several options. Many have a gameoad check box you can clear to make it stop usimg the gamepad. Others simply take keyboars input when you provide some.

Yeah, tried these. They don't change anything...

Then ask in the game forum if its possible to disable gamepad promots with a gamepad attached.

I have the same issue and it really pisses me off. When I enter steam it says I'm a controller but I have never attached a controller and it doesn't sense one either. I can't accept friend requests and I can't do some things on steam because I have to have a controller. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Nonsense.
You don't have to have a controller to accept friends requests.

With that out of the way, check the device manager, if there's a controller there. You may have installed software that installs a virtual controller.

I don't see anything in device manager. Are there any other ways to fix it?

Define "anything". What I can tell you, is that you've likely installed something that emulates a gamepad. Such software exists.

Are these dates right?

Late to the discussion a smidge, but I had this issue out of the blue. Fixed it by right clicking the game in my library > properties > controller > disable steam input (drop down box). Seemed to sort it for me, hope that helps someone.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
