If you want all Steam functions ( playtime counter, achievements, trading cards and so on) you have to buy the game directly on Steam.
you can add it as non steam game however (i think, never tried to add uplay games as non steam games), just select the exe located on your drive.
While you should be able to find Assassin's Creed Unity's executable by using the [Browse] -button and going to wherever you installed it (by default it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\)
That's not how non steam games work. You add the exe from the uplay folder and when you launch it from steam all it does is launch it from uplay and enable you to use the steam overlay.
The game will never be in your steam library.
Simply go to your Steam games Library, and launch an installed Uplay-enabled game from Steam. If you are not already logged in to your Uplay Client for PC, you will be prompted to log in.
