Steamworks Common Redistributables
Every time I start steam, it re-downloads (updates?) "Steamworks Common Redistributables".
Literally every time.
Is there any way to stop this behavior?
Steam works fine otherwise, I just don't understand why "Steamworks Common Redistributables" has to update every time.

By the way,
I even disabled auto-updates a while back.
But as soon as I want to play a game, Steam still forces the update of "Steamworks Common Redistributables".

Those generally happen with the Tuesday maintenance updates for the Steam client.

Today is Wed...
As I wrote, on my PC it updates every single time I run Steam.
Doesn't matter which day.

Same here.

And the update is always the whole package. 954 MB.

That's nearly 1 gigabyte download every time.

Not good for those of us who have data caps and no other choice of internet.

Steam, do you really want my business?

Fix this.

same prob here, I hear there is a new store threatening to open up if valve won't sort it's issues out. Sooooo yeah goodluck valve if you keep letting bugs like this slip through. If anyone has a solution to this please tag me in it or something. Thanks

It isn't a bug.

I typed about this problem and I got a reply;
"This tool downloads because we recently sent out an update to consolidate all required redistributable updates (DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, PhysX, etc) shared by various games to a single folder, which will save you space. We're doing this instead of having you download duplicate files going forward."

The problem is, I use External drive and every time I plug it out and in, Steam wants to update SCR appr. 600 mbs. I delivered this situation: SCR files are downloaded in each drivers, "WHAT IF THESE FILES DOWNLOADED ON DRIVER C: AND WE DONT NEED TO REINSTALL FOR EVERY DRIVERS?" I am not shouting, just I wanted to get more attention on that phrase ^_^

I mean; I wish Steam can analyse "I already have these files on Driver C: and when external driver comes, it carries only extra games but I can use SCR files I already downloaded on Driver C:" Well, this explanation was smth that I expected but I didn't want to hear that. I play without external drive, everything is fine. I wanna play a game not installed on C: but I have it on external drive, then Steam wants to download SCR again. But these duplicated files.. Do they have to be on external drives, too? What if they are located only on C: or where Steam is installed main driver, because I have steam on C: and some games on external, less played or too much gbs for C: Driver.. Can it be so? (It's the same sentence I typed and I hope someone can see this and find solution about main driver files and games on external driver or usb sticks are just extra games on our libraries, bla bla :)

Do you want the old way back? When those files weren't stored in a central place and updated for every game separately wasting a lot of space?
The new system exists so those files are NOT duplicated.

Oh come on! I didn't mean all separate and duplicated! I meant: these files are located on main disc, and when we plug in an external disc, this external disc will give only game files but common files will be on main drive and always fresh, updated, so when we plug in external, the external hdd will not be needed "SCR update" .. clear now? ^_^

While using and disconnecting/reconnecting an external drive, you may have to put up with the behavior as Valve explicitly states that odd things are bound to happen when using them and recommends to NOT use them for active Steam games.

I'm having the same problem. as far as I can figure as soon as you remove a storage device steam thinks the games have been uninstalled and removes the redistributables. I wish there was an option to stop this. its killer for those of us with limited data. I have been looking for a solution but non appear to help.
if anyone knows what I can do to stop this. please post it somewhere...
it's getting to the point where I cant play half my games because I cant switch out my harddrives.
