Restart Steam.
Would uninstalling and reinstalling steam fix my categories?

Thanks but that shows installed games, what I've lost is the categories on the left of the Library section.
Luckily I've found a backup but now don't know how to make steam see it because steam is just overwriting it everytime.
Try this
Exit Steam. dont just close it, use the Steam very top left and exit.
Click Start > Run (Windows Key + R).
Type the following command: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair.<< press enter
Launch Steam and test the issue again.
What causes these afaik is when Steam is incorrectly exited .
You had a crash.
All mine are intact

I think my only solution is to make steam recognise this backup of my 7 folder somehow...
Copy that to a new folder as a backup.
then paste your old backup let it over ride while Steam is exited.
Previously, when you deleted a game that was free (like a free weekend) it would delete from your hard drive, AND your library AND the category (if you put it into a category).
It looks like this steam update has readded those "free" games to the library permanently so they are still visible. This has then readded their category.
Therefore, it looked like steam categories was screwed because I saw categories from 2 years ago in my list. Categories I only made to hold a free game like "test then delete".
I checked my old backup steam categories file from 5 months ago, it had the removed free games in it, but they were hidden in the library view when on the old steam client (from my memory). This new client has readded them.
Probably a bug.
