The client does not use that much unless your system is crap.
Not true. Steam CEF implementation is suffering for massive memory leaks from about an year.

You better check your system. Steam is currently forcing downloads for all images on the client because our overlords have decided that every image must now be hi-res.
Why is Steam eating up my RAM suddenly?
This new library skin is mega garbage, at least have an option to revert.
What the ♥♥♥♥.
I can't fathom what kind of abject stupidity and incompetence leads to something this insanely retarded.
Whoever designed this update, and whoever okay'd it, needs to be fired.
This ♥♥♥♥ looks like a bad mix of Origin and Uplay and it's disgusting.
The simple, utilitarian design of the old Library and its options to make it look/work differently were just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fine, now we have this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of an update that's guzzling down ram like a workaholic ♥♥♥♥♥. I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sick of it already.
Well yeah, Steam is based on Chromium, the open source project Chrome largely is based on.
Well the UI appears to be a lot busier, IE more complex. That has consequences. And complaining about major updates and increased requirements is an Internet rite of passage.
I remember people grumbling about Steam in 2003 with it's 100mb memory footprint. Somehow we all survived.
Chrome running several tabs with one of them playing 1080p video was doing that, having Steam hidden is still eating 500MB of RAM. That's retarded, it peaks at halfway past 600 sometimes. I don't understand what lead to this.
The ironic thing is Epic pushed an update to fix their UI today and it looks better.
Even then that's not the only argument being weighed on this change, unless they've deleted the threads again someone made a list of things wrong with this update. Along with other problems they've run into. None of the feedback from the beta was taken into account, they pushed this half-baked garbage fire out anyway.
It also downloaded hi-res cover art for every one of my games, installed or not and dropped back into my library 30 F2P games I tried out years ago, this is great for metered connections. I think overall it was several hundred MB, someone posted on reddit that their entire library of 3000 games had their pictures downloaded for this fancy new trash UI. Neat.
