so what qualifies as "offensive"?
i have been banned from uploading a profile picture because the one i previously had was the infamous "grinning hitler" picture that was banned in nazi germany because hitler thought it made him look crazy. my name used to be "adolf_h_1889", a spoof on the "jose.gonzalez.2009" email handle names and their derivatives.

my first question is this: how can a bog standard portrait be considered offensive? while i understand that people object to the personal character of hitler, what he has done, etc, at the end of the day it was simply a portrait, no different than an old black & white portrait or the mona lisa.

my second question is this: what actually constitutes "offensive"? while i understand that offensive content will be banned, when is something offensive and when isn't it, according to valve? how can something so subjective be defined concretely? is this up to the feelings of the moderator? the feelings of any individual steam user?

i would have an easier time understanding a profile picture of a middle finger or a slur in your name resulting in a ban, as these things exist to offend. all i had was a face, a name, and a birthday. were they an infamous man's face, name, and birthday? yes, but that doesn't change what they are fundamentally. these are not inherently offensive things. nobody has ever told me that they find my picture and name offensive. generally they are indifferent. when they do comment on it, they find it funny. to say that more users approve of it than disapprove would be an understatement.

also, how do i challenge this? when i got the message it said i could challenge this ban, but after going to the steam support page to read the rules, i can't read the message again and click the link to challenge it.

"Hitler"

That's literally the problem you're having.

You shouldn't use any picture of Hitler, at all, or anything else of nazi-imagery.

Yes, yes "but there are games that--" so what?

hitler = offensive. Period.

In short, don’t use Hitler anything.

On the right nav panel is the link to your community messages. Contact support there, though, not sure this is a situation that I’d challenge. That’s my opinion. If you wanna challenge it then by all means go for it.

Yup, Phallic Corn, from Goat Simulator is in fact: not Hitler. nor is it actually phallic in any way, particularly in goat simulator.

Censoring the mere image of the big H is stupid.
All these companies trying to be real feel crew and trying not to offend anyone inevitably hurts the company.

We don’t know the context behind it. Usually these actions are taken based on reports. If so how many people reported? Was there any other kind of inappropriate actions going on such as spamming an in game chat system? Etc.....

Never martyr Hitler by using any references to him, pictures included on the internet, Steam is internet based.

I have a bunch of Hitler pictures uploaded on Steam and they're not banned or anything.

I find what he did was offensive.. an image of him . yea.. no..

Erasing/censoring history is never a good thing.

Yes by actively acknowledging the offensive nature of it is “erasing history”

Please troll elsewhere

i never spammed anything, it was just a name. i rarely message at all in games, except to say "lol" or to respond to someone talking to me. if i were spamming i wouldn't have made this thread, because the reason why i was banned would be understandable.

Hey .. I didn't say that I would report it.. even if I did.

I dont care really what people do ..

I find other things offensive in these forums.. however that doesn't change the way the world revolves. .

Reporting what I find offensive is subjective anyways.

How the heck is thinking its offensive erasing it anyways..

sure I find it offensive.. however I'm not going to go around and report posts cause of it.

Whatever Satoru.. you always got a bone with me anyways.

Have a great day.
