downloads not working

I've been at this all day now trying to download a game and update my others. Whats happening is the downloads either re-queue themselves (When they hit their download time instead of downloading they just move to a different time) or if I try selecting the play button I get this message.

An error occurred while updating Snakeybus (manifest unavailable):

I'm using the one above as a reference, any of the games I try to play that say update queued do this.
I can't use the steam support site link due to the black screen issue that's still going on.
Almost all of my downloaded games are doing this, some of them aren't even on the downloads page. The only one that isn't is Portal 2 and I have a feeling that its because of the fact it hasn't had an update in years.
Please help I'll take whatever ideas you guys have got.
I have tried clearing my download cache, turning off firewall, waiting and checking integrity of game files(which only made it worse)

I actually solved this earlier by switching to the west african server, worked like a charm

You're not alone, a friend of my with a mac has also troubles with downloading the games on steam. She can't play any games now. :(

Yeah, I've learned that when having download issues in Steam, the first step in troubleshooting is switching download servers. That helps very often.

That's wonderful you got it working, but I wanna know WHY it is happening in the first place. And how do I fix it? I do NOT wanna reinstall Steam cause that seems like a REAL pain in the butt, and I'm not even sure that would fix it.

I don't know what you mean by reinstall steam but changing servers can be done by going to settings then to downloads, changing the download server and then resetting. If you want to find out whats happening you may have to open up Steam's code in the folder, however i really don't advise it since it can be solved a simpler way

Yeah but the download from say South Africa is awful, I'm not downloading a 20gig game from some 900KB/s South African server

well try every server, i have a friend who has to use the Moscow server i got lucky with the west African server. Even if its slow its better than having your games be forever stuck on the downloads screen

I could try gettting it started on say the African server then switch to the NYC server, all it needs is to get the Manifest file with the game file list, that seems to be the sticking point.

i suggest not switching if something works even if something is closer to you, whatever works works. the closest for me is Phoenix and I have to be on the African server for it to even work

how do you change the server to download from?? dudes, remember there are commoners that just step into Linux and don't know all you take for granted.
