Pinning steam to taskbar results in 2 icons
Ok, I know there are about hundred other posts about it but I've read them and no matter what I do it just doesn't work. When I try to pin the currently open window it just makes a duplicate on the taskbar and the active one is highlighted despite it being the one I pinned. If anyone had similar problem and found a solution I'd be grateful for an answer. Thanks in advance.

Unpin both, start Steam, pin new icon.

Unfortunately that doesn't do anything.
Maybe I worded it poorly, I'll edit the original post.

Try this.

Windows stores shortcuts for pinned stuff in a folder in the appdata so it might not be removing the shortcut.

Try this.

1 - Unpin the icon.
2 - See if the shortcut still exists here: "%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar" if it does delete it.
3 - Repin it.

Windows may not allow that if the item being pinned is a sub branch from the first.
Any open windows if you need to quickly move to the other use a keyboard trick I know.
All open windows on your desktop.
I'm running windows 7
Press hold the windows logo key down tap the Tab key scrolls all open windows on your screen stop on the you want to look at.
In windows 7 it scrolls through them.
Windows 10
Alt+Shift+ tap the Tab at the same time.

I don't need to switch windows, I need to get rid of the extra icon on my taskbar or for them to merge into one.

Oh I see.
Screenshot if possible as it sounds like it needs details. usually anything pinned to the taskbar can just be unpinned by right clicking it?
Edit, are you seeing an open window in the preview bar
close the window it disappears. Other than that?
All open windows will be on the taskbar.
could you explain it please

That's how it looks for me:

Second from the bottom option says "unpin from taskbar".

Thanks.
Its a bit difficult as its written in a foreign language.
On the side lol. I have my windows 10 at the top :)
Is one the Steam client boot strapper
It looks like you have 2 Steam boot strapper pinned.?
Check your taskmanager.

One should be hidden at the bottom behind the arrow -running tasks.
And there is a Steam boot strapper at the bottom as well.
Could you right click the Steam boot strapper at the arrow bottom and exit Steam first.
What remains on your Taskbar now?

Right click your taskbar> Taskbar settings. Have a look at what settings there could remove unwanted items on your taskbar.

It looks like you have 2 Steam boot loader pinned.

One should be hidden at the bottom behind the arrow -running tasks.
There is a Steam boot loader at the bottom as well.
Could you right click the Steam boot loader at the arrow below and exit Steam first.

Right click your taskbar> Taskbar settings. Have a look at what settings there could remove unwanted items on yoru taskbar.

When I close the "behind the arrow" steam it leaves just one icon on the taskbar.
Also in the taskbar properties I have the section "taskbar buttons" set to "always combine" so theoretically the problem should fix itself.

It could be a settings in the taskbar settings . Can you check what is running in your task manager?
What is the 2nd Steam icon there?
agree there should be only one for the Boot Strapper.
Let me check on the windows 10 BRB

In task manager there is only standard stuff running, nothing steam related. Regarding the little icon on the bottom, it is not related to the taskbar, at least that's what I understand from the few other posts I encountered.

W moim systemie Windows 7 możesz to zobaczyć

That little Steam icon behind the arrow will always run when Steam desktop client is running.
It appears on the taskbar near the clock and date just like yours.
When that is right clicked >exit > the desktop Steam client will no longer be running
On my windows 7 you can see it

Right, but it doesn't affect open windows or taskbar icons in any way, it just means that the steam is running in the background. When I close it only one icon remains on the taskbar and no other steam processes are active.

The remaining Steam icon on your taskbar after you exit Steam right click that one and unpin please.
