Suddenly getting super low FPS
I bought a really good gaming PC about half a year ago, ive been treating it carefully and well and ive been using it consitently ever since i got it and everything has been completely fine and its been running perfectly. I mostly played FPS games like CS:GO and i have been playing with 300+ FPS and almost never experienced FPS drops or any lag at all for 6 months. About 1 and a half month ago i completely stopped using my PC because its finally summer and i would rather be outside. Today i decided that i would turn on my PC for the first time in 1 and a half month and play some games. I noticed that when i turned on my computer it started up for a second then completely shut off and then slowly started up again. It took unusaly long time to start up and my PC was overall really slow. I opened minecraft and tried to play, my PC wouldnt run more then 30 fps. I didnt really care about it because it was minecraft and FPS doesnt matter. I then decided to start up CS:GO and play. My PC was still being slower then usual and when CSGO finally open and i start a game i notice that my FPS is staying at 20-40 FPS. I put on all my video settings to low and the FPS still stays at 20-40. I have "fps_max 300". I tried restarting the game and the computer, and my PC still wont run more then 40 FPS. Anyone else now the issue and how to fix it? Please help! P.S I have very little knowledge about computers, bought mine already built and how no idea whats going on inside it.

Corsair TX550M, 550W PSU

Messaggio originale di ELK:
Yeah sounds like it's running on board graphics instead of your 2800. 2 things to check. Firstly there are multiple hdmi and display port connections on the back of your computer. It is a cable running from your monitor to your computer. Your motherboard has both an hdmi port and a display port. If your plug your monitor into one of these then you will ONLY be able to use onboard graphics.

So make sure the cable running from your monitor to your computer is plugged into one of the hdmi or display ports of your video card, and NOT the motherboard. (both are on the back of your computer lol)

Then it's on to googling. There are multiple ways to disable the on board graphics. through the device manager as suggested in the post before me. Possibly through your bios (don't change any setting in there unless you are 110% sure), and probably other ways.

and WOW I just read your specs real quick. 550w with a 2080 and a 8700k. W T F. I'ma check out how many amps you got on your 12v rail but knowing corsair when they say 550w that's 550w on a single rail 12v coil alone.... but that is probably not enough to run your computer. and check if that is enough electricity BUT I HIGHLY DOUBT IT. It wouldn't be your fps problem but it could damage your PC.

Test your components one by one, if you can.

You've never seen 300 fps, unless you have a monitor that has a 300 refresh rate, which I guarantee you you do not. However, 40 isn't great with that setup as it is, so obviously something is wonky.

make sure that the case is clean inside, no dust, nothing blocking any fans, all the air flow is good, and that all the components are properly seated and plugged where they're meant to go. Smell it when it starts, Magic Smoke of Doom might be on the way if a component is fritzy.

If you bought it already built and aren't comfortable opening the case, FIND SOMEONE YOU TRUST that can help you. It's best if you learn how your computer looks on the inside, what each component is meant to do, etc - so that you will be able to troubleshoot it better.

It seems like it's overheating, by your description.
The first thing i did was to clean it. I took out all the filters and removed all dust, then i opened the case and tried to carefully blow and remove some dust. Because of my little knowledge i decided not to touch anything at all inside but it looked like there was no dust in there, atleast not enough dust to block anything. The air flow is good and the fan is running fine. I dont know anyone that is good with computers so i really dont know what to do.
Where did you purchase it? / from whom?

Could you do this please, go up to the top of your Steam library window and click HELP > SYSTEM INFORMATION, and paste the ENTIRE list here? Because that'll show driver types and dates, OS, and other things :)

It's possible that something in the operating system has changed settings, if you're on Windows 10 you might need to manually switch your video for gaming to the graphics card. (Sometimes windows 10 has been known to alter which device is used, the motherboard's onboard graphics, or the video card - usually the card's supposed to be used, but if this has been changed, you have to go in manually to get that to work!)
Thank you so much for helping me. I bought my PC from a norwegian computer company called Komplett. https://www.komplett.no/

First that video card driver is half a year old, head over to the manufacturer's site and download the newer driver. (you do NOT need to install any of the other bloatware like the Experience, unless you want to be taking panoramic screenshots with their onboard system. otherwise, just grab the driver and tell it to install that alone)

What you want to maybe try, is get into your Control Panel, find your Hardware Manager, and look for your video adapter. Make sure that your video CARD, that nvidia 2080, is the ONLY one that's showing.

Since you're on windows 10 and I don't use it, I cannot give you specifics about where to find those things, I only know 7. You might need to disable the video coming out of the motherboard (the Intel 630) so that it *forces* the computer to utilize the video card instead.
Ok so i think i found the issue. While i was looking for the software to uptade my driver i found something called "Armoury Crate" that was already downloaded. I opened it and it says that i can update my Driver, but everytime i do install it just goes to 100% and then my PC restarts and when i open my PC again its not installed and tells me to install again. But im pretty sure that is not the issue with my FPS. There were 3 different programs that was downloaded to my desktop that followed with Armoury Crate. One of them was called "CPUID ROG CPU-Z". On there it was aloooot of settings and information. It says "CPU, Caches, Mainboard, Memory, SPD, Graphics, Bench, About". After looking around there i found the issue. When i click "Graphics" it says "Display Device Selection" and under it gives me an option to choose between 2 graphic cards. For some weird reason its selected as "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630" instead of my NVIDIA 2080. I change to the 2080 card instead of the Intel and press Ok, but then it just changes back to the 630 automatically and idk how to change to the 2080...
You do NOT need any other program to do this. Armory crate is probably going to just confuse things for you.

DISABLE the 630 MANUALLY, that should fix it.

Hopefully this googled info will help you do that:

Press "Windows-R" to open the "Run" tool, type "devmgmt.msc" into the box and then click "OK." Double-click the "Display Adapters" category in the Device Manager window to display its contents. Right-click the graphics device labeled "Onboard" or "Integrated" and select "Disable."

actually 550w is plenty. sorry.

edit: but check that the cable from your monitor to your pc is going to the correct port, the video card one not the motherboard one, then see about disabling onboard graphics.

Ok so it turned out that the entire issue was just that i had my Display cable in the motherboard port and therefore I was only able to use my onboard graphics. I plugged the cable in the right port, disabled the onboard graphic card and changed to my 2080 and now I can play with 300 FPS again. Thank you very much Zekiran and Cleveland for the help, really apreciate it! :)
lol hey look at it this way at least it was a simple fix :D
