[Solved] Restoring steam backup when one of the backup disc lost
So I made a backup disc for LA Noire game that consist of 3 DVD, but I lost the last backup disc. Can I still restore it partially and download the rest so I can save 10GB of download? Thanks

I don't think so.

Steam's "Backup and Restore" isn't particularly well done, probably because Steam doesn't consider it to be useful themselves.

No that does not work. Steam Backup compresses the files back to their pre-install size, so its basically one big block of data.
You can split that over multiple discs when burning but you need all parts of a backup to restore it.

thanks for replying. I just tried to restore it, and when it prompts the disk 3, I cancel it, then it prompts me again to continue installation or cancel it. Apparently, it will just download the rest of the game if I choose to continue. Should have just try that before asking it here. At least it only just download the 3GB remaining. :D

Well I wouldn't say that. I would say it's a legacy feature that isn't as relevant today as it was 15 years ago.

It appears a couple of people in this thread made some faulty assumptions. I would have guessed the same too, that you'd be up a creek without the full backup. Although I'd bet if he was missing disc 2 instead he'd have to download all the data from disc 2 and 3. Still better than a poke in the eye.

Even though I don't use the Backup feature myself it's nice to know Steam's implementation is a bit more forgiving than one would assume.

it still helps me backup game when I don't have any storage left in my hdd (and not even an external hdd either at the time this game backup was made), and the only cheapest storage i could afford at that time was dvd-r. it's great to know that steam still support this.

just for anyone who need this, my game restored completely after steam downloading the remaining files, but the backup and restore window didn't close. if you click "cancel" and choose "cancel installation", the whole game files will be deleted.
already had a hunch that steam will do that, I do the following:
- put the game files and the meta files (.acf on steamapps folder) to other folder,
- cancel the installation and exit steam (this is the point where i know those game files gone)
- put the files back on its location
- open steam again.
the game will be validated by steam. no download happens after that.

I hope someone on valve fix this bug (if they see this as something worthy to fix).

Apparently, you could just create a new folder (or a new disk) which contains just the sku.sis file (copy it from the other disk, open it in text editor, and change the disk number). Restore as usual , and after it complete, Steam will download the missing part.
