My Original Account has been hacked, any help appreciated
So, this is rather sad to say, but my steam account was quite literally the most valuable thing to my name, (quite young so no house or the like) and was a collection of over 700 games carefully selected over the course of around 10 years.

It has been hacked, or hijacked, or compromised, I have no idea what the correct terminology is. The steps steam recommends don't seem to be helping whatsoever, and I for the life of me can't get in contact with steam support.

I am still logged onto the account on the client, I think purely because it hasn't logged me out yet. The password seems to have been changed as I can't get through any verification stages with my old one. The mobile number attached to my account has been changed to one that is not mine. A purchase of over 100 pounds was refunded and then the money spent on community items, all of which without me doing anything. The request for a refund was in Russian (no surprises there haha). Also a small payment has been made for a game with a card that I do not possess. The only thing that seems to be unchanged is my email account, although half the time the emails don't come through to me. So I've no idea what's going on there.

I opened a ticket asking why the items were refunded, saying I did not ask them to be, but the ticket was deleted by the hacker I presume before anyone from Steam support looked at it. Hence why I have created a new account. Also, when I try and change the password, I get quite far but then cannot submit the final form to Steam Support, because they cannot verify my captcha. This also makes no sense to me, as I've never had to do one of those picture select things, but after a bit of research it seems like it may be because of cookies, and google recommended deleting cookies. However, when I looked into that, it said it would sign you out of everything. And if I do that, I have every expectation that I will be locked out of my account and that will be that.

Literally any help anyone can give would be so appreciated. I have no idea what to do, am at a complete loss, and stressed to high hell.

There are different ways to try to change the password or email of the account.
Which one did you try?
I recommend you going to the steam client, click on steam(top left corner), settings, account, view account details, change my password, I no longer have access to my Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator and choose the options you think will help you after that.
That's the best way to change the accounts password or email. Tell me if you have already done that.
Also, about the cookies situation, what browser are you using? Chrome? Also could you screenshot the captcha and what it says after?

That is indeed one of the ways I tried, doesn't work. Can't remember what stage it falls through at. I know the recover code for mobile isn't one I set myself, so that's a dead end. If I say I've forgotten everything, then it takes me to a form which then won't submit because of the captcha issue.

I'm using Firefox. That's the thing, there is no captcha that comes up for me to do. It just says that the captcha (which gives every appearance of being non-existent) cannot be verified. I'll screenshot that pop up for you now

uploaded it as artwork since ive no idea how this works haha

wait no actually I can't do that on the account that has been hacked, because it will be deleted again I assume, or some other reason. But it's good to know that I can verify it through card details (all except one purchase has been from my card so that should be a good start), but will have to get the ball rolling with a ticket from this account instead.

Try the captcha on chrome, if it doesn't work could be a steam problem instead.
Also, how did they/he change the phone number of the account and password? You didn't get an email asking for confirmation? That's impossible to change without them having access to your email account. And if they do have access to your email accounts that's a lot worse.

the message is popping up on the steam client, not on a browser. So I assume it is a Steam problem.

Absolutely no idea on that one, makes no sense to me either. I've succesfully changed my email password since though so hopefully that's secure now. As I said, only a small proportion of the emails steam said they have sent to me have turned up in my inbox. So something fishy is going on with my email but I haven't the foggiest what it is. But it happened somehow.
My email password was the same as my Steam password come to think of it, so makes sense they'd have access to both

Since you are still logged in the client, go to steam>settings>account and check if the contact email is still the one you had. If it isn't, they changed it and i don't think there is much you can do apart from trying to contact steam support, and that means they will take some time to respond.

It is still my email yes, thankfully. Still the same one. How long does Steam usually take to respond to a ticket, do you know?

Also, are you still logged in in the steam app? If you aren't, and the account is still in your email, try to change the password through the phone. See if the captcha works

No I never succesfully logged into my previous account with the app. I tried to, but the verification email never came through to my account. So my phone is no help. I have since set up a new email with which to set up steam guard for this account, so I can post on the forums, and that worked fine and the email came through right away. So I'm logged into this account on my phone, but not the main account

Ok thats really good. Try to change the password through the steam app. If you are not logged in, click on forgot the password and choose the options for stolen account or to change password. You could also make a new email and try to change the account to that email. Also try the option that says you lost your steam guard authenticator and type your email.

I have tried that, unfortunately to no avail. I believe the roadblock I ran into when trying that was needing the recovery code for the steam guard mobile thing, which I never set. I think what may have happened is I had set up a phone number but before the times of the steam guard authenticator thing, so I don't know if it was that hard to change. I don't know if that is it, because I don't remember exactly. I don't even know when this was implemented. But I certainly don't remember doing it myself, and never had a recovery code. Ironically, I have a recovery code for this account after having to set it up properly to post on the forums. Might try going down that route again to confirm that's where I end up just in case. Also tried the new email thing, that didn't work either.

I don't really know what else you can do apart from messaging steam support now. If the account is still in your email but you are not getting email confirmations to change the password, its probably steams fault. Contact steam and hope for the best. Costumer support got a lot better recently but i still think they will take some time to respond.
Hope u manage to get your account back
