I was added to another person's Friend's List without my knowledge?

Today I restarted Steam, and in the lower right there was a little popup that said "userX added you to their friends list". I don't remember the user name. The popup went away as soon as I read it. I did not receive an invitation, let alone accept one. I do have an invite in my box, but I know where that came from , and have not accepted/denied it, and this new one was a different name for sure.

Questions...

1. Can someone add me to their 'friends' list, with no invitations being sent or accepted?
2. If I am on a person's list, will the automatically show up in mine? My list does not show anyone else (other than the single friend I have on the list... I'm a loner, what can I say).

This has me a little paranoid.

Do you have a new friend?
Otherwise you were added but then this was cancelled before you could accept

I don't. So the answer to #1 is no, and #2 is that I can be on his list, but until I accept an invitation, my name on his list is just that, a name only with no access?

Sorry, I have never tried to add anyone, so I don't know exactly how that works.
