This is a bummer, how long do the servers take to fix?
I finally got my first proper gaming PC, in anticipation for being able to bank on some of the steam sales, then I saw that the store is down. I didn't realize they took such a huge hit on the servers when they start it, but I guess it makes sense lol.

When should I expect to be able to get back in?

I didn't expect anything better from STEAM lately anyway.
It's been going down the drain since quite a while now.

Happens every year, I guess they never prepare, ?

Just give it a hour or two. No point to keep on checking :)

Summer Sale has already been started, yes. But while they are busy shopping for new games, the Steam Store's server was crashed

I always factor in 2-3 hours before things start to get normal.

This is common enough I think its time to find themselves a new CTO. I mean, I don't have any anks with the guy (or girl) but this is becoming an annual event ... not the sale, the epic fail!

Yeah they could certainly buy some extra server capacity from AWS or something. It's not like that this comes as a surprise.

Name me one site that doesn’t have these problems at the start of their major sales and I’ll show you a site that doesn’t do enough business.

With the number of active users who all MUST have their games the moment the sale starts... well, that’s a recipe for an instant DDOS.

15 million active shoppers....I don't know but Stores like amazon don't even cough at this sort of load.

Oh, is that the same Amazon that has their own cloud computing service in the form of AWS?

Likening a Steam sale to the rush for sports/music tickets that can hit ticketing websites is a much more valid comparison.

Well, aren't we the Valve fanboi today.

Every year they do this. Every year it *&^%$# up. Fix it so it doesn't &^%$#@ up, or do it differently, its that simple.

There's a 1000 sites out there that handle Black Friday, and other such events without problems.

If your the CTO doesn't know how to do it, then hire the CTO from one of those companies, or send him over to conference with them and learn.
