Steam slowing down PC when downloading
Hello, since a few weeks I have the problem that steams slows down my Computer when it is downloading. In addition, the download-speed is very slow (sometimes below 1mb/s). I cleared the cache, tried with and without firewall, changed download region, etc. but nothing helps. I don't have the problem with other programs, where I can download with 30 mb/s and still work on my PC whitout a problem. It is only steam that causes this.

Does anyone know why this could be?

Steam downloads use a lot of disk activity, that's why. You shouldn't use your PC while downloading large files especially if you have a HDD. The 1MB/S could just be the internet connection slowing down to allow the disk to unpack files. Post a screenshot of the download tab, including all of the green and blue lines.

steam has issues with downloading, this issue has been ongoing since 2013 or later.

you will most likely have to deal with the issue, i doubt steam is going to fix it.

It's not really an issue, it's just normal that Steam downloads take longer than most since the files are highly compressed.

Ok thanks. I'm using a ssd, so it really can't be the problem. For example, I can download in origin with a higher download-rate and work on my pc just fine and they are both on the same ssd.

It's not really an issue, it's just normal that Steam downloads take longer than most since the files are highly compressed.

false, it is an issue and like mentioned has been an issue since 2013 or later.

I understand, Steam uses a lot of disk activity which is most likely why that's happening, the benefit is you download less, but the comprise is the disk is used heavily which can lead to the system feeling sluggish.

I don't. If you're talking about high disk usage that is normal.

just steam being steam, it has many long standing issues that havent been fixed or even acknowledged.

not including the download speed drop outs, you will also possibly notice or start noticing a "preallocation" process that will slow down your installations as well.

download speed is the issue, which was clearly mentioned in the OP, also "high disk usage" isnt "normal" its steam causing more usage by doing stuff it doesnt need to.

Slow download-speed is one thing, the more "annoying" issue is that it slows down my entire pc. Just opening a folder sometime takes a minute when I'm downloading in steam. The moment i stop the download, everything is fine again.

It might seem that it's slowing down, that's to let the SSD unpack all the files.

ya..

since the recent updates steam is using way to much pc resources and is being complained about heavily.

if you dont want it to impact your pc heavily, then i suggest installing steam and its games on a separate drive from your OS.
