Saving save files to a memory stick or external hard drive

Hi, I was wondering how I could save the save files or needed files to either a memory stick or external hard drive. I don't need to save the entire game, just the save files, so that when i get the new sd drive installed, i can play the games where i left off without starting everything all over again. And I want to make sure i do this properly, so i don't mess up the files or game. Is it as simple as just copying the save file, or are there specific files and things I have to do? Does it vary from single-player to multi games, how i would copy the files and not lose them or is it the same process, regardless of game, etc? Thanks and please forgive the dumb questions lol, just want to make sure i do this properly and don't mess up the files/game.

it depends on the game
some are saved in the games folders, other in windows user documents, some in windows registry

+1 to gamesave manager, it can get most saves and save them as a file on a usb stick or drive to be restored on another pc or whenever needed
