Steam client opens multiple instances of web browser
Hello,

For several weeks I have the following problem :
When the steam client launches it opens a lot of external web browser (multiples windows, and multiple tabs). At first it was Firefox so i have uninstalled it. But then it was IE.
The pages in the steam client are not displayed at all.
If i close the steam client, the opening of external browser tabs stops.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled steam client, but nothing changed.
I have also check my computer with online antivirus, but without result.

Do you have an idea of what happens ?
Thank you

Check for malware, not antivirus scanner.

Steam does not open things unless you set it to, so go through the settings found in Steam > Settings, and read everything carefully so that you don't wind up being deluged with things you don't need to see.

What exactly is ON these windows that you see opening?

I have the same problem. Upon opening Steam, Firefox launches and opens tabs continuously until the computer's memory is full and the system becomes unresponsive.

Steam tries to open : www.error.com

I've run an AV scan : nothing. Stopping steam halts the issue. I'm a bit puzzled, I haven't installed anything new on Steam for weeks, same for my computer... :S

Delete Steam's web cache.

I tried, nothing changed.

I have cganed in windows parameters the default application for http protocol, seting Chrome, and then it was chrome that opend multiple times.
Then i have set back to IE, and renamed the folder containing IE, so the steam client cannot find IE, and then no windows open.
But the steam client displays only white page in its interface.
I tried again to re-install it, nothing changed.
I don't know what to do... i cannot use steam anymore unless via a web browser.
Is there an official support by steam itself ?

I've been having the same issue. It seems to be the webhelper causing the problem, though I don't know how to fix it. I can play games I've already downloaded if I open Steam via a shortcut using the -no-browser trick, but can't access the library or anything.

Same for me, it's been a few days without issue. Believe one page of the Steam website was broken and they fixed it. Fingers crossed ! :)
