[SOLVED] Paypal suddenly not using balance?
Mostly wondering if someone else has had this problem and if they found a solution (Paypal's support is ... lacking).

I'm trying to buy a game and when I log into Paypal (through the Steam client), I only get the option to pay with a card. There's more than enough money in my Paypal balance to cover the cost, so it doesn't make sense (I set Paypal to use my balance, though I think it already was, and it made no difference).

I've been using Paypal with Steam for ten years or more and I've never had this problem before.

Step 1: Log into your PayPal account
Step 2: Access your PayPal Balance
Step 3: At bottom select PayPal Balance as default payment mode
Step 4: Back in Steam use the PayPal option, and ensure the checkbox is unticked
Step 5: Complete transaction

you need to change the paypal payment method

log into paypal with a browser, change default method to paypal balance first, then your preferred account/card ect..

Use the PayPal option, not the My PayPay option.

When you choose My PayPal it's because you have set up a billing agreement for Steam in PayPal, you cannot use your PayPal balance when paying via billing agreement.

If the purchase from a Store Cart Checkout doesn't work, use the same method to add funds to your account (using the above method). Then purchase using your steam funds.

Hope that helps!!

It was already set to balance, both in general and for Steam specifically. I set it again, twice (and got email confirmation, twice) , just in case, but it makes no difference.

Edit: Actually, the option to use the balance just magically disappeared from all the preferred payment settings. Interesting...

This just started happening to me also. It wants me to use a charge card and the ability to select the PayPal balance is gone. I've had both accounts in good standing for years.

Sorry to hear that. I've so far had no luck finding out why things changed, and obviously it's too much work for Paypal to actually tell you anything...
(Googling actually turns up some Paypal help pages about the problem that sound like they might have been useful, but those pages have apparently been removed from the site. Recently, I would guess, or google wouldn't show them).

Tried that too, but I get exactly the same thing from the two Paypal options (only CC, not balance).

That actually worked, which is strange because it's pretty much the same as what I had already tried (maybe I did it in a slightly different order or something).

Thank you!

I'm bumping this old thread to say BigG's solution actually worked. Also, PayPal support is total garbage, don't waste your time contacting them.
