Knowing what CPU you have would be a great start.

Also, where it says Steam (6) in task manager, click on the down arrow, see what processes are running.

Hi guys,

so I've been bumping into a wall lately with Steam process consuming 20-30% CPU or even more at some times.

I got sick of this and started trying to fix it until I finally found a solution today, before anything else I want to tell you which fixes I tried before as long as every case is different and maybe some of them could make it for you, so this is what I've tried until I fot it done:

Reinstalling Steam
Changing skin to a different one (either stock or custom depending if you are already using one or another)
Deleting every file on Steam folder but Steam. exe, steamapps and userdata (this will reinstall without losing data or games)
Preventing Steam from using all CPU cores and making it use only one of them
Disabling Ingame Overlay

Those didn't work for me, that's why I started to tweak things and try to find out on my own. Here is what I did and finally reduced my Steam CPU compsumition:

Open steam Settings
Go to Controller section
Open General Controller Settings and deactivate/activate some options before exiting
In the same menu, make sure you deactivate Guide Button option (the first one)
Open and close Big Picture Config
Open and close Desktop Config
Open and close Guide Button Sequence Settings

My guess is something was missconfigured or making some kind of conflict with Big Picture or Controller settings and that's why it only was fixed once I entered and changed something in there. I hope this will fix it for you guys cause I really struggled with this sh**. I'm sorry if my writing or settings section name is somehow mistaken but I use Steam in Spanish and I translated that on the go.

Enjoy your gaming, willing to hear if this fixed it for you or not.

Have a great day!
