Audio Output Device Replaced With Steam Streaming Speakers - No Audio Output
So Steam seems to have replaced my audio output device with "Steam Streaming Speakers." Issue is, these "speakers" that do not exist do not output any sound at all- my computer is effectively muted. I have no other output devices available, and plugging in headphones does nothing to fix the issue. It won't even detect that headphones have been plugged in. This just started yesterday. What can I do about this?

Reinstall your sound driver which evidently went missing.

How would I go about that?

EDIT: All my audio drivers are present, yet I apparently have "no audio output device" installed.

Obviously, since they are Steam related, uninstalling Steam should also remove them but the link shows you shouldn't have to do that.
Thanks for the reply, but I already tried that. I don't have any audio output devices anymore, apparently.
Hey, did you end up figuring this out? I'm having the exact same issue.

In my case, restarting fixes it every time. Seems like installing a steam update causes this every once in a file (~1 time a week)
I had this exact same problem and nobody made any suggestions that worked for me. Then I remembered I had recently swapped out some RAM and when I booted up the first time the BiOS told me I needed to complete first time setup or something and to hit "F1". I did and went into the BiOS and loaded my last saved BiOS configuration. Well I suspected maybe something wasn't saved correctly in the setup I loaded.

Sure enough, when I checked the "HD Audio" option in the BiOS, it was set to "disabled". I set it to "enabled" and all my speakers and mics came back when I got into Windows.

So I'm thinking there's a good chance for anyone else who can't get their speakers back from doing any of the things mentioned above, try finding your audio setting in your BiOS and see if it needs to be set to "enabled" or "on".
I just got this same issue today, and I checked my BiOS settings and HD Audio was already enabled. I have tried restarting my computer multiple times, as well as plugging the headphones and microphone in and out. My computer doesn't register them at all.

Has anyone found another fix?
I had this problem today (unsure why). I had to download the RealTek driver package and install it again after disabling the Steam Audio driver. I did purchase a game yesterday and install it so....I suspect it is the game install (purchased from Steam) for breaking my audio.
So I get this problem almost every day. I don't quite know when or why it happens, but I've definitely noticed it happening after I let the pc go idle long enough for it to turn off the display.

Every time this happens, steam stream speakers are the only device recognised by the audio management. If I disable (or enable depending on its current state) steam streaming speakers, the pc immediately decides that it has a sound card, it shows up in the device list and the audio kicks back in. This works 100% of the time.

Step by step:
1. Right click audio device in task bar - > open sound settings
2. Click manage sound devices
3. Enable (or Disable) steam streaming speakers

The annoying part is I have no idea why this happens, or why toggling the steam speakers suddenly fixes the problem until next time. I've found little to no official information on this, but it's evident that other people are suffering the same issue!
Years later and I am here to report the issue still happens.
Same problem for me.

Disabled and uninstalled Steam speakers and microphone, and am now without audio output devices.
Downloaded and installed Realtek driver, but it is not showing and does not seem to fix anything.

Can not find an Audio option in the Bios. Feeling sad :(
Just happened to me too.
Me as well, worst part is Steam offers no support Just a big F you to customers that spend good money on games.
At least for me, a quick fix was to go into Nvidia Control Panel, Setup Digital Audio. My audio is through the HDMI connection, so I set it to Turn Off Audio, hit apply, set it back to my display, hit apply, and it works.
reinstalled windows. problem solved.
