Audio Output Device Replaced With Steam Streaming Speakers - No Audio Output
So Steam seems to have replaced my audio output device with "Steam Streaming Speakers." Issue is, these "speakers" that do not exist do not output any sound at all- my computer is effectively muted. I have no other output devices available, and plugging in headphones does nothing to fix the issue. It won't even detect that headphones have been plugged in. This just started yesterday. What can I do about this?

I think the bigger question is. Why is steam jacking our output devices? I think the next step is to rip out the speakers and microphones, because now they will be listening just like this socialist government we have.

So, I reinstalled windows and I got my audio back. But than installed only my AMD video drivers and software. This made the problem happen again. I un-installed amd adrenaline, and got my audio back again.

If anyone else is facing this issue, what saved me is disabling the steam streaming input & output services through the system-sound-all sound devices and restarting the laptop afterwards; just like the user TruePug described it above.
What initially caused the issue for me was that I streamed my laptop to my smart TV, but I didn't even use steam or anything, so it's very weird and intrusive that steam decides to swap your sound devices over and screws up the entire system.

This worked for me by following your instructions plus a Shift+Restart > Turn off your PC. I'm unsure if that last step is necessary, but it was my order of operation.

Thank you.

I "solved" this by:
* My computer is not in english, some words may be different *
1. Open "Realtek Audio Console".
2. Advanced Settings.
3. Choose "Make front and rear OUTPUT devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously".

Now you can select "Realtek HD Audio 2nd output" as your speaker at the taskbar icon.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
