Would like to run world of warcraft classic with a controller using steam big picture.

I'd like to run world of warcraft classic with a controller using steam big picture, specifically an Xbox 1 controller and a custom binding setup, but whenever I launch the game and it takes me to the battle.net launcher, steam automatically stops thinking the game is running after a few seconds.

I've tried this with minecraft and it works fine from going to the game launcher to the game without stopping controller input or thinking the game has closed.

Can anyone help me to get this to run?
